Call of Duty: Black Ops 4: In-Depth Look at “Contraband”

Like a Call of Duty deathmatch, Black Ops 4 map “Contraband” is all about collision.

Biomes collide as the twisting corridors of the jungle meet the wide-open spaces of the beach. Old meets new, as ancient ruins give way to high-tech control rooms. And sometimes the collision is literal: the map appears to be the result of a massive tanker running aground.

But, this map, and others, bring to mind the collision inherent in any gorgeous Call of Duty map. Here, as in Black Ops 4’s “Seaside” and “Militia,” natural beauty goes head-to-head with unending violence.

In short, “Contraband” works on a thematic level. But, for this article, we’ll take a look at how “Contraband” stands up from a design standpoint.

The jungle, in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 "Contraband," is often claustrophobic.

How is Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Map “Contraband” Structured?

“Contraband” is composed of two distinct halves. The beach occupies one side of the map, and jungle covers the other. The difference here isn’t just aesthetic. While the densely packed jungle provides corridors of trees, perfect for setting traps and launching sneak attacks, the beach is mostly open and vulnerable.

There are a few exceptions, however. For instance, empty cargo containers provide small hideouts from opponents and UAVs. And, more importantly, the crystal blue water that inundates the shore allows for stealth takedowns on unwary landlocked foes. Additionally, underwater tunnels crisscross the level, allowing for speedy and unseen traversal.

A bridge, bordered by water on both sides, forms the map’s mid point. In modes like “Control,” players are often tasked with capturing or defending this bridge. So, swimming is an important tactic to master if you want to succeed in “Contraband.”

Corridors etch their way across the map, some through ancient ruins and some along the decks a modern cargo freighter. These are excellent places to lay traps and wait for opponents. However, these locations aren’t always safe from attacks from above. Many of the ruins are missing their roofs.

Does It Work?

As in the best Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 maps, “Contraband” facilitates multiple playstyles, and different modes serve to bring these options to the fore. With tight corridors, wide-open areas and snaking underwater tunnels, “Contraband” will take players a while to thoroughly learn. But, the effort, as in the best Call of Duty maps, is worth it.
