Former Overwatch League player Felix “xQc” Lengyel will be invited to Team Canada’s roster for the 2018 Overwatch League World Cup, according to Canada coach Justin “Jayne” Conroy.
xQc is one of the more controversial players in the esports world and was released by the Dallas Fuel earlier this season. Prior to being released, he was hit with a four-match suspension and $4,000 fine for using a Twitch emote “in a racially-disparaging manner” in the Overwatch League’s stream chat.
Since then, xQc has moved to full-time streaming and has run into a few problems with his neighbors, who have called local police with noise complaints twice.
Despite xQc’s almost three-month absence from the Overwatch League, it seems that Team Canada’s committee representatives have decided to give him another chance.
Canada coach Justin “Jayne” Conroy also provided some insight about other potential players that will join xQc in the World Cup.
During a live stream last week, Jayne was answering viewer questions and one viewer asked about the prospective Team Canada lineup. Jayne said supports were going to be a challenge to find, but did talk about five players they planned to invite.
“The five we are going to invite – kind of skip the tryouts at the very least – are xQc, NotE, Mangachu, Agilities, and Surefour,” Jayne said. “And that shouldn’t surprise literally anyone.”
Of these five players, three are currently competing in the Overwatch League’s inaugural season. Lucas “NotE” Meissner is a starter for Boston Uprising, while Brady “Agilities” Girardi and Lane “Surefour” Roberts play for Los Angeles rivals Valiant and Gladiators, respectively.
The other two players, xQc and Liam “Mangachu” Campbell have definitely proven their worth and have shown that they can bring a lot to the table for Canada. Mangachu plays in the Contenders series, where he’s on XL2 Academy.
Despite his departure from Dallas Fuel in March, xQc was a key player in Canada’s silver medal in last year’s World Cup alongside Agilities and Surefour. To top it off, xQc was even voted as the MVP of the event by fans.
Team tryouts for the World Cup are going on right now and will run until July 5. After that, committees will submit rosters of up to 12 players, but only seven players from each roster will travel to live events.
Competition will kick off in August with the group stages. The tournament will culminate in a battle among the top eight teams in November.
