Last night, Bethesda held their E3 presentation showcase. As fans knew ahead of time, neither Elder Scrolls 6 nor Starfield were due to appear. However, Bethesda still had a few surprises up its proverbial sleeve. The most significant of these was the announcement of Ghostwire Tokyo; a new action-adventure game coming from Tango Gameworks, the studio behind The Evil Within and The Evil Within 2.
Ghostwire Tokyo – The Next Game Coming from Tango Gameworks
Tango Gameworks is one of several studios, such as id Software and MachineGames, which are owned by ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Bethesda Softworks. As such, Bethesda publishes all of their games, and hence why the reveal came during the Bethesda presentation. Specifically, Tango Gameworks is a Japanese studio, founded in 2010 by Shinji Mikami, the director of the original Resident Evil (among dozens of other major titles). Since then, the studio has developed two games; The Evil Within, and The Evil Within 2. Now, the studio is ready to unveil its third endeavour.
Mikami himself began the presentation, but he quickly handed over to Ikumi Nakamura, the Creative Director for Ghostwire Tokyo. Nakamura was Lead Concept Artist for The Evil Within, and has a career mostly in concept art and visual design, working on games like Okami and Bayonetta. Ghostwire Tokyo definitely seems to be a new sort of game for Tango. Set in Japan, as the title indicates, it appears to be about combating paranormal forces within the city of Tokyo. Indeed, the trailer appears to emphasise the paranormal and unsettling more than the horrific; a shift somewhat from The Evil Within. According to the presentation, it will be an action-adventure title. However, the studio has yet to reveal much else.
As this is just the first announcement of Ghostwire Tokyo, fans will probably have to wait to see any glimpses of gameplay. Indeed, it’s unlikely to make a reappearance during this E3. However, the trailer certainly seems to have gotten a lot of gamers excited to see more. Ghostwire Tokyo could well end up being one of the biggest and most memorable announcements of E3 2019.
