Bethesda Announces Rage 2

Following a series of teases and leaks, Bethesda has now made it official: id Software’s 2011 post-apocalyptic shooter Rage is getting a sequel.

Bethesda accompanied the announcement with a teaser trailer that you can watch below. The trailer doesn’t contain any actual gameplay, but it does show a bunch of real-life actors partaking in some Mad Max-style hijinks, confirming that Rage 2 will continue the post-apocalyptic theme and that players looking for more over-the-top mayhem won’t be disappointed. A worldwide gameplay reveal will follow tomorrow, May 15, and that reveal will assumedly include details such as which platforms Rage 2 will be available on and when its release date is.

Rumors that Rage was getting a sequel first sprang up last week when a leaked Walmart Canada listing mentioned upcoming video game releases such as Gears of War 5, Just Cause 4, new Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell games, and Rage 2. It’s important to note that just because the Rage 2 listing wound up being accurate, that doesn’t necessarily mean the other listings are real as well (though it certainly gives them a little added legitimacy). To its credit, Bethesda didn’t flat out deny the existence of Rage 2 once the leak was public, opting instead to tease fans with a series of cryptic images that eventually culminated in the announcement trailer above.

When it launched in 2011, the original Rage received positive reviews from critics, but it failed to make a lasting impact despite its unique blend of shooter and RPG elements. A year after Rage’s debut, id Software was planning on developing a sequel but Bethesda decided the safer bet would be to cancel the sequel and have id focus on its newly rebooted Doom game instead (considering how well-received Doom wound up being when it launched in 2016, it seems Bethesda made the right call there).
