When Borderlands 3 was voted Most Wanted Game at Gamescom earlier this year, it suggested that fans were incredibly excited for Gearbox’s latest title. That suggestion has now been borne out in figures; publisher 2K has revealed that Borderlands 3 is officially their fastest-selling game ever. In fact, the game has outsold Borderlands 2, which previously held the record, by more than 50%!
Borderlands 3 Sold Over 5 Million Copies in its First 2 Days
As reported by IGN, 2K has revealed that Borderlands 3 sold over 5 million copies in it first two days after launch. This wasn’t just a new record; it left the previous record in the proverbial dust; the figure is more than double what Borderlands 2 achieved in the same time. Interestingly, 70% of the game’s sales have been digital; further indication that more and more gamers are continuing to shift to digital downloads over physical purchases.
Although Borderlands 3 was certainly anticipated to have a strong sales performance, there were concerns that sales could fall on PC due to the game’s exclusivity to the Epic Games Store. However, just as with Metro Exodus earlier this year, that concern has not been borne out upon release. The game actually broke pre-order records for the Epic Games Store, according to a 2K press release; “Borderlands 3 delivered the highest pre-order sales figures to date for a 2K title,” it reads; “as well as broke pre-order records with the Epic Games Store. Initial sales of Borderlands 3 have exceeded the label’s expectations and, in particular, PC sales of the title through the Epic Games Store have been incredibly strong.”
The game has also dominated Twitch since its release; no doubt in part due to Gearbox’s work on developing the ECHOcast Twitch extension. The game has already generated over 14 million hours of content on the site. That figure is especially notable because it is already over half of the total amount of content generated by Borderlands 2 in the last seven years.
