Call of Duty: Black Ops 4: In-Depth Look at “Frequency”

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 map “Frequency” takes players high up in the mountains for a misty grudge match.

The compound’s decor is a mixture of white vinyl and high-tech vid screens. It appears to have been a base for the game’s starring specialists. Perched amid rocky peaks, the compound overlooks additional buildings in the Chinese jungle below.

The setting interestingly juxtaposes the natural world and advanced technology. Meanwhile, the gameplay serves up the familiar mixture of corridors and open spaces.

Read on for an in-depth look at the structure of Black Ops 4’s most vertigo-inducing map.

How is Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Map “Frequency” Structured?

Like fellow Black Ops 4 map “Seaside,” from a bird’s-eye view “Frequency” looks like a snowman. Teams spawn in arenas at the south and north ends of the map. And a third arena opens up in the center of the map. Between each pair of arenas, two smaller rooms force up-close-and-personal skirmishes.

“Frequency” also follows “Seaside” in its accommodation of multiple paths through the level. With a left, right and middle route running the length of the map, “Frequency” serves up plenty of tactical options. Narrow walkways skirt the compound’s outer edges, perfect for laying traps.

Get Vertical

For the most part, the central rooms are situated higher than the outer halls. This means that players on the inside will often have a height advantage over their opponents on the outside. That can be a major advantage in modes like “Control” where spots along the outskirts become capture points.

Players on the ground aren’t completely out of luck, though. A pair of ladders lead to the upper level, meaning that players who keep an eye on these spots will be rewarded with slow-moving targets.

So, don’t be afraid of your opponents, and don’t be afraid of heights. It’s much easier to conquer “Frequency” than it would be to conquer the mountains that support it.
