As it turns out, new Cyberpunk 2077 trailer and gameplay footage weren’t the only reveals which CD Projekt Red had for today’s Night City Wire event. The studio also took the opportunity to formally announce a previously secret project – Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. This upcoming anime series is currently in development and will reportedly be coming to Netflix in 2022.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Coming to Netflix in 2022
Today’s announcement of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners didn’t include any actual looks at the series itself; suggesting that Edgerunners is still in very early development. However, it did include some key information about what fans can expect. The series is currently in development at studio Trigger in collaboration with CD Projekt, and is due for release on Netflix sometime in 2022. According to today’s presentation, Edgerunners will be a completely standalone story with its own cast of characters. While it will be set in Night City, it won’t have anything to do with the story of Cyberpunk 2077.
Given that the story is completely independent , it remains to be seen whether Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will take place in the year 2077, or at another time. The game, after all, is based on the original tabletop RPG Cyberpunk 2020. While some elements of the original canon have been re-envisioned, Cyberpunk 2020’s events are largely still canonical, with Cyberpunk 2077 taking place 57 years later. As such, Edgerunners could feasibly take place anytime within that 60-year span. (Particularly if its story is totally separate from any other story in the same universe.)
For now, fans will most likely have to wait awhile before any more news about Cyberpunk: Edgerunners emerges. With the anime series still two years away, it’s likely that new details will be scarce for some time. However, it’s worth noting that this absolutely opens the door to more adaptations of the Cyberpunk 2020/2077 setting. Given the success of The Witcher Netflix series, it’s entirely possible that Netflix or another company might want to do a similar Cyberpunk series if Cyberpunk 2077 performs well.
