After Three Years, CD Projekt Red Still Has No Plans for The Witcher 4

Polish studio CD Projekt Red released The Witcher III back in 2015. Since then, the company has commented on occasion about the possibility of The Witcher 4. In general, their statements have been that they have no immediate plans. That position appears to be concrete following comments made regarding the studio’s upcoming game, Cyberpunk 2077.

High-ranking members of CD Projekt Red have affirmed their position on a number of occasions. Despite the enormous success of The Witcher III, the company seems happy to let the story end and move on to new projects. To be clear, they have not ruled out the possibility of returning to the franchise. However, there appear to be no current plans to do so.

Marcin Iwinski, CD Projekt’s co-founder, stated as much back in February. Speaking in an interview with PCGamer, he said that, “We’ve devoted a big part of our lives to The Witcher and it means a lot to us, so we’re definitely not abandoning this universe. … If you miss your favorite characters—give GWENT a go. If you’re a fan of storytelling, there’s Thronebreaker coming out in the near future. However, in terms of big RPGs, it’s time for Cyberpunk 2077.”

Thronebreaker, Cyberpunk, & the Netflix Series

Thronebreaker is the single-player mode planned for Gwent: The Witcher Card Game. CD Projekt Red recently announced a huge 6-month overhaul of the game. That overhaul, entitled Homecoming, will see the game finally leave beta, and Thronebreaker will be coming along with it. While it isn’t a full Witcher game, the Gwent card game has been very popular since the release of The Witcher III.

While fans may not see another Witcher title for a long while yet, there are a lot of reasons to be excited about Cyberpunk 2077. The long-awaited sci-fi RPG is widely rumored to be featuring at E3 later this year. With any luck, it may finally have a release date announced. In the meantime, CD Projekt Red has continued to keep The Witcher III updated with new patches. Although the most recent patch did cause some graphical issues, the company is reportedly already working on fixing the bug. There is also the Witcher Netflix series to look forward to, although it may not be coming until 2020.
