Cyberpunk 2077 Will Not Have a Companion System

During the Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay demo, the player spent much of their time alongside the character of Jackie. The role of his character in the demo prompted many fans to speculate about whether the game will include different companion characters. However, the game’s Senior Quest Designer has now said that there won’t be a Cyberpunk 2077 companion system.

There Won’t Be a Cyberpunk 2077 Companion System

Following the gameplay demo, a thread was started on the official CD Projekt Red forum. Forum members were discussing whether players would need companion characters all the time or whether they wouldn’t be needed. As it turns out, it seems that they were laboring under something of a misapprehension. The game’s Senior Quest Designer, Philipp Weber posted on the forum to clarify that misunderstanding. (Under the username “Benzenzimmern”).

Cyberpunk 2077 Will Only Feature Companions if it Makes Sense for the Story

“Hey,” he began; “like in The Witcher, if the story calls for it, you will have a companion or two for a mission, but we don’t want to do a “companion system” where you’re never alone. In some quests you will be by yourself, in some you will have one person like Jackie or even a whole group, and in other quests you might be alone or with someone else depending on the choices you made. We really want to have it fit the story, so basically you’ll always have someone with you if we think it’ll be interesting. Like I said, it can also be dependent on the choices you made. Sometimes if you leave someone behind and it makes sense for the story for them to stay behind, we’ll do it. And another time they might catch up. Whatever works best in a situation.”

So, while Jackie did accompany V for much of the gameplay demo, that was purely based on story. Players won’t have a companion system as one might expect to see in a Mass Effect or Dragon Age title, for instance. If V has any companions during Cyberpunk, it will be because it makes sense for the story; much as was the case for The Witcher.
