Cyberpunk 2077 Player Count Drops 80% in Just One Month

According to recent analysis by statistics website GitHyp, the active player count of Cyberpunk 2077 on Steam has dropped by almost 80% since the game’s December launch, despite initially strong sales. Given that the PC version of the game is generally considered to be the most playable, this statistic doesn’t bode well for the console versions.

Cyberpunk 2077 Player Count Drops Precipitously

Following launch, any major RPG tends to see an initial spike in its active player count. This figure typically subsides over the following month. An 80% drop isn’t unheard of in this regard, although it is a sharper drop than other notable titles. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, for example, saw a drop of only 50% after its first month. The game’s active player count peaked in early December at over 1 million. However, it has since fallen to around 225,000 daily players (a drop of around 79%).

Cyberpunk 2077 Player Count Drops 80% in One Month 2

These statistics are specifically for the PC version of the game on Steam, and herein lies the problem; the PC version of Cyberpunk 2077 is widely considered to be the most stable. It was the PC version which was released ahead of launch for reviews. Indeed, the game still has a positive review score on Steam, indicating that the game doesn’t suffer from many of the stability issues and bugs as the console versions do. If, despite all that, the game’s player count has dropped by 80% in one month, that figure must be even higher for the PlayStation and Xbox versions.

The game’s console launch has been so bad, in fact, that CD Projekt is facing a class-action lawsuit from shareholders. The suit was filed in late December; “on behalf of persons or entities who purchased or otherwise acquired publicly traded CD Projekt Red securities”. It remains to be seen how this will impact the company. However, in the meanwhile, the studio is focusing intently on releasing hotfixes and patches as fast as possible.
