Cyberpunk 2077 Players on Xbox One Will Get it Free on Xbox Series X

In a somewhat surprising announcement, CD Projekt Red has finally confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 will be coming separately to next-gen consoles. However, and quite importantly, Xbox One players get an added bonus; gamers who want to get the Cyberpunk 2077 Xbox Series X version will be able to get it for free if they already own the game on Xbox One!

How to Get the Cyberpunk 2077 Xbox Series X Edition for Free

Responding to a tweet from Xbox about the compatibility of the Xbox Series X, CD Projekt Red stated; “Gamers should never be forced to purchase the same game twice or pay for upgrades. Owners of Cyberpunk 2077 for Xbox One will receive the Xbox Series X upgrade for free when available.”

Importantly, this clarifies that the game will be coming separately to next-gen consoles. While it might seem obvious that this would happen, CD Projekt Red has previously refused to clarify whether the game would get a separate next-gen release. In general, the studio has deflected such queries by stating that they are focusing on the current-gen for their release window. (Although it has long been assumed that a next-gen release would occur post-launch at some stage.)

Cyberpunk 2077 Xbox Series X Free Upgrade From Xbox One 2

Of course, the more interesting aspect is that Xbox One owners can get the next-gen release for free. This should be an extremely popular policy; one likely to increase pre-orders for the Xbox One version, in particular. Since the delay to the game’s release date, there has been increased concern among gamers that they would miss out on a next-gen release if they bought Cyberpunk 2077 at launch. After all, a next-gen version could arrive just a few months later. This news certainly mollifies those concerns, at least for Xbox users. Of course, it’s notable that this policy does not extend to the PS5, at least not yet. For now, PlayStation users will have to wait and hope that the studio is able to adopt the same policy on their platform of choice.
