Dark Souls and Grand Theft Auto Are A Surprisingly Good Mix

Despite FromSoftware’s reluctance to officially support (and in most cases actively condemn) the development and use of mods in the Dark Souls franchise, fans have long found interesting ways to modify the series to their tastes. Want to play Dark Souls 2 without encountering any enemies? No problem. Maybe you want to take some of Dark Souls 3’s boss creatures for a spin? Have a blast.

The latest Dark Souls mod from Nexus Mods user Dropoff doesn’t do anything quite so drastic. Instead, it adds in a full cosmetic skin of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas protagonist Carl “CJ” Johnson, offering a delightful treat for GTA fans while also showing just how much potential the Dark Souls modding scene still has.

Carl Johnson never looked so good.

Dropoff’s Carl Johnson in DS mod isn’t overly fancy, nor is it overly complicated in its implementation. According to Dropoff’s own words, the mod was made possible thanks to a recently released modding tool called DSFBX which was created by a fellow modder, Meowmaritus. The DSFBX tool allows modders to import models and assets from other games, so Dropoff went ahead and replaced the game’s Hard Leather armor set with CJ’s character model (this means that those who select the Warrior class can play as CJ from the get-go since Warriors begin the game with a full Hard Leather set already equipped).

Other Dark Souls modders have already noted how the release of Meowmaritus’ DSFBX tool opens the door to some very strange possibilities since it allows the importing of not only video game models but custom models as well. Lara Croft, Duke Nukem, Spyro the Dragon, any of these and other beloved video game characters (or entirely original assets) can now potentially show up in Dark Souls’ world of Lordran. The golden age truly is upon us folks.
