Destiny 2’s New Breakthrough Competitive Mode Won’t Ship With the Forsaken Expansion

Last month, a Game Informer cover story for Destiny 2’s upcoming Forsaken expansion revealed, among other things, a new Crucible PvP mode called Breakthrough which developer Bungie plans to add to the game’s competitive playlist. Now, a more recent Breakthrough-focused Game Informer preview has provided new details on the mode, including the fact that it actually won’t be available on day one of Forsaken’s launch.

Breakthrough won't be available until after Forsaken's launch.

The very first sentence in the Game Informer preview confirms that Breakthrough won’t be initially available when the Forsaken expansion launches in about a month on September 4. A specific timetable for when Breakthrough will be added to the game also isn’t provided, but it seems safe to assume that the new mode will be included in one of Forsaken’s first few post-launch updates. This assumption is also bolstered by the fact that, at least going by the Breakthrough gameplay that Game Informer got to sample, the mode seems to be pretty much finished. However, Bungie was also careful to note in the preview that additional changes to the mode’s structure and/or balancing could still be made between now and Breakthrough’s launch.

Along with what was already confirmed in the initial Breakthrough reveal, the Game Informer preview also confirmed the following additional details which, again, are subject to change should Bungie deem it necessary:

  • Unlike the two currently available competitive modes, Countdown and Survival, there doesn’t appear to be a limit to the number of times players can respawn in Breakthrough.
  • When one team captures the first control point, the other team is afflicted with a debuff that increases the length of their respawn timers, making it harder for them to defend their home control point.
  • It’s still technically possible for the defending team to hold out and win even with the respawn timer debuff, but they’ll have to coordinate their efforts so that they can consistently outplay the attacking team even when the chips are down.

Along with Breakthrough, Destiny 2’s Forsaken expansion will naturally include some new Exotic weapons and armor pieces, several of which Bungie recently showed off in a new gameplay trailer.
