Detroit: Become Human’s Photo Mode Has Been Cancelled

Detroit: Become Human has enjoyed great success since the game’s release. It has been Quantic Dream’s most successful video game launch to date; it has even surpassed the sales performance of Heavy Rain by a sizable margin. Shortly after the game’s release, the studio’s co-CEO Guillaume de Fondaumière announced that Quantic Dream would implement a Detroit: Become Human Photo Mode. Now, it seems that those plans have been cancelled.

Detroit Become Human Uses Too Much Memory Already to Implement the Mode

The Cancelled Detroit: Become Human Photo Mode

The director of Detroit: Become Human, David Cage, has now confirmed via Twitter that the Photo Mode plans are cancelled. According to Cage, the team were able to create and implement the mode. However, they ran into problems due to the game’s memory usage. “We implemented a photo mode,” states Cage; “but the game uses all the memory, so it seems hard to add anything. We really pushed the console as far as we could to make the game look as beautiful and loadings as seamless as possible, which left little space for anything else…”

Unfortunately, it seems that the hardware is the limiting factor here. Quantic Dream maxed out the PlayStation 4’s memory in order to make Detroit: Become Human’s graphics as good as possible. As a result, there’s now no room for additions. Unfortunately, unlike a PC, the limitations of the PlayStation 4 are immutable. As a result, the game won’t ever be able to get a photo mode, except perhaps on a future version of the hardware with improved memory. Several other games have recently gained Photo Modes post-launch; both God of War and Far Cry 5 have added such modes in recent months. In fact, both Ubisoft and Santa Monica Studios chose to hold fan contests to celebrate the new additions. Unfortunately, in a rather ironic twist, Detroit: Become Human is so visually stunning that it’s impossible to put in a way to record that very fact!
