Dontnod Announces “Twin Mirror” Less Than a Week After Vampyr’s Release
Dontnod Entertainment, the creators of Life is Strange and Vampyr, have announced their next game; Twin Mirror. The announcement comes less than a week after the release of Vampyr, which has so far received mixed reviews. The game’s story has received significant praise, but reviewers also criticized the action and combat gameplay for being “stale”. Twin Mirror, at least what little has been shown, looks as though it might be a step in the right direction.
The announcement trailer doesn’t reveal much, other than a brief look at the premise. What does seem apparent is the emphasis on story rather than combat. While there is some momentary conflict present, it doesn’t look anything like the Bloodborne-esque combat present in Vampyr. As a studio best known for storytelling, it looks as though Dontnod is getting back to what they do best.
What Do We Know About Twin Mirror So Far?
Twin Mirror will tell the story of an investigative journalist named Sam who returns to the town of Basswood. However, soon after arriving, he wakes up to find his clothes covered in blood, with no recollection of how it happened. It looks as though the game plans to be extremely psychological, focusing on the exploration of memory. The trailer even shows what appear to be imaginary and highly surreal landscapes; although, perhaps there are supernatural elements at work. Given Dontnod’s history with Life is Strange, where a protagonist discovered that they possessed supernatural powers, it’s possible that Twin Mirror could feature something similar.
The game has no release date at present, but is apparently planned for release sometime in 2019. Hopefully, the game isn’t so far along in development that Dontnod can’t apply the lessons they’ve learned from the reaction to Vampyr. The announcement is coming very soon after Vampyr’s release, and given that the trailer appears to show at least some early form of gameplay, it’s likely that Twin Mirror has already been in development for some time.
