Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Free Access Weekend Starts Today

From today until next wednesday, Activision is running an ‘Extended’ Free Access Multiplayer Weekend for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. For the next five days, gamers will be able to play a selection of Modern Warfare’s multiplayer modes and maps for free.

The Modern Warfare Free Access Multiplayer Weekend

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Free Access Multiplayer Weekend begins at 10:00 AM PST today (the 7th of August). From that point until the same time on the 12th of August, Modern Warfare’s multiplayer will be partially free-to-play. This is a longer period than previous ‘Free Access Multiplayer Weekends’ have offered to gamers; typically, such events take place from Friday to Monday.

Of course, this event doesn’t give full access to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Gamers won’t be able to play its single-player story campaign, for instance. Rather, it provides access to a small selection of the game’s core multiplayer; a map mosh pit playlist featuring several different modes and five of the Modern Warfare maps. Perhaps most notably, two of the featured maps are Petrov Oil Rig and Suldal Harbour; two of the new maps which were recently added with Modern Warfare Season 5. In this fashion, the Free Access Multiplayer Weekend serves as a way to market the Season 5 content to new players.

Livestock and Verdansk International Airport, the other two new Season 5 maps, do not feature in the Free Access event. The former is only available for the Gunfight mode, while the latter is for Ground War; neither of which are available to play for free. Gamers will need to purchase the full game in order to access those, of course, along with the rest of the new content in Modern Warfare Season 5. It should be noted that the majority of the seasonal cosmetics and new weapons, etc. are fully usable in Call of Duty: Warzone as well.
