EA and Respawn Announce Massive Apex Legends Global Series

Today, following the game’s recent win of Best Multiplayer Game at The Game Awards, EA and Respawn have announced the Apex Legends Global Series; a huge, 22-event global esports tournament, starting in 2020. This competitive league, which will begin with an open online tournament in January, will feature twelve live events throughout the year and a prize pool of over $3 million.

“Twelve live events around the world,” explains Respawn; “Over $3 million in prizes. Starting January 25, 2020, the Apex Legends Global Series is where the best will compete. Are you ready to do what it takes to become a champion?”

The Apex Legends Global Series will be taking place throughout 2020, first with ten online tournaments, followed by a further twelve live events produced by EA and Respawn, PGL or GLL. Initially, competitors will participate in squads in the online tournaments, which will let competitors register and earn both Apex Legends Global Series Points and invitations to live events. Above those are the Challenger Events. These will reportedly; “focus on a segment of the Apex Legends competitive gaming population,” to “give local talent an opportunity to shine”. Each Challenger Event will have a prize pool of between $25,000 and $75,000, and winners will get reserved spots in upcoming Majors.

Above the Challenger Events are Premier Events; global live events featuring the world’s best teams battling for advanced placement in the Majors. Plus, these events will have prize pools of $100,000 or $150,000. Finally, there are the four Majors themselves. The first three of these events will feature 100 teams competing for Global Series Points and a $500,000 prize pool. Finally, the fourth Major, which is the Global Series Championship, will feature 60 teams and a prize pool of $1,000,000.

The first of these online tournaments will be taking place between the 25th and 27th of January. After that, there will be a second online tournament from the 29th of February to the 2nd of March. Then, the first Global Series Major will take place from the 13th to the 15th of March. The remaining events, and their respective dates, have yet to be announced.
