Fortnite’s Rifts Are Shrinking And Could Close By the End of the Month

Predictions for a major change to Fortnite’s skies are emerging following a recent data-mine. The report suggests that the game’s skies could soon change significantly. For quite some time, the skies have been dominated by the massive Fortnite rifts; left there by a rocket launch at the end of Season 4. The rifts, which served as the inciting event of Fortnite’s fifth season, may actually be about to close.

The Slowly-Shrinking Fortnite Rifts

The opening of the Fortnite rifts kicked off the latest season of the game, making it possible for other worlds to spill over into the Fortnite universe. A recent data-mine shared on Twitter by Fortnite: Battle Royale Leaks suggests, however, that the rifts have slowly begun to shrink. In fact, at the current rate at which they are closing, they could close completely by the 21st of August. Not only will they close, but they will completely disappear from the game’s skies.

Fortnite’s sixth season is due to start on or around the 17th of September. Unless something changes in the game soon, that would leave several weeks in between the rifts closing and the new season’s launch. It’s currently unknown what the closure of the Fortnite rifts will mean for the game, and for Season 6.

Season 5 has been characterized by the items and oddities that have been bleeding through the rifts. In fact, Epic Games staged a viral marketing campaign where they placed a replica of the Durr Burger head in the desert near Los Angeles; as if it had bled through the rifts from Fortnite into the real world. The burger head was accidentally discovered by a professional photographer who was scouting locations for a shoot.

Epic Games will really need to work hard to top that particular campaign for the launch of Season 6. While Fortnite is regularly the victim of leaks, new season content appears to be a slightly better-kept secret. At least for now.
