Totally agree, games these days are exactly like playing through a very long movie, as was said above, so it makes no sense to take the immersion out of the equation.  It's like watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy from the start of The Fellowship and then Skipping to the last 40 minutes of Return of the King.  You miss the whole point.

I always play for the story, even games I've played multiple times through, the story is a big part of the experience, so I never skip :)

Kingdom Hearts II, apparently.  I was never a big KH fan, so I don't know if it truly was the best game of 2005, but it got rave reviews, I do remember that.

I just want to see them keep physical media alive.  I know that's asking far too much for today's generations, but the collector in me hates that we're going to lose physical games very soon.  I know most of them are essentially just serving as keys to download the rest of the game, but there's something about owning a physical copy of a game that makes it feel more certain.  I own this, it's mine, it's right here.  Digital games can be gone in the blink of an eye.  It's entirely improbable that physical media continues for another generation, but it's the one thing I hope for.

That's the risk, definitely.  There are going to be hunts where you find nothing or nothing of interest to you, and there are going to be hunts where you find a lot of "meh" titles, but that's what makes the hunts where you find the truly great stuff worthwhile.  It's like anything in life, you've got your share of disappointments that aren't fun, but they make the great moments worthwhile!

PGen98 got a reaction from Heatman in The retro market is getting pricey, are you worried as a collector?
As someone who WAS trying to complete my Saturn collection, but has had to stop because...I just can't afford it, yeah.  I'm worried about the prices of games constantly rising.  I am somewhat hopeful that the recent decline in the collector market popularity will indicate falling prices, at least somewhat, then I could snag some other games I'm looking for on other systems, but for the most part collecting as a whole is beyond me.

Exactly! Without the game's story, there's absolutely nothing for me to play for. It's the bigger picture for me in any kind of game. It's what lures me into playing any game to begin with.

I have gone on the hunt a few times, it can be thrilling just like you pointed out but where I had issues was failing to find something worth buying in the end. It happened a few times to me and that had me discouraged from doing it again.

I can see it's a great game, but as a trans woman I cannot support anything that benefits the author, so will be completely avoiding it.  I won't get into the specifics, that's not what this thread is for, but I hope those who do choose to play it enjoy it, there is no way any sort of boycott was ever going to happen for this game, it's just too popular, but from a personal standpoint I will not in any way support this game due to who profits from it.

Yup. Most of the Sega Saturn games I owned in the big jewel case, were often broken or falling apart. They had the right idea, but I think the best case you could get was the the cases Sega used for the genesis. The hard plastic, was probably the best case you could get. I know they skimmed on cases going forward since they wanted to stop using plastics so much. Look at the 360/PS3 cases when they started getting rid of manuals, they also cheeped out on the cases.

I think people would be okay if they actually honored cleaning products they ship out as refurbished. If something is refurbished, I expect it to also be cleaned in the process. They could as easily sell an item "as is" if it's never been opened up.
The prices they set is kind of an afterthought. The focus is more on the idea that they sell items as refurbished, but never refurbished them. I think what's happening is that they get a used item into their store, test it, and if it works, slap that warranty sticker on it and sell it as refurbished. So they can in turn also set a higher price.
If they were actually refurbishing these consoles, I wouldn't care. The prices are one thing, but lying to your customers about what they're getting, is not a good look.
They thought no one would be wise enough to open these consoles either, but YouTubers did exactly that and outed their scam. And they can't come out and say they're sorry for these problems, because it would show they knew about these consoles not being cleaned or even refurbished. So they have to play along and keep denying they did anything wrong. I hear it could also open them up to a class action lawsuit if they were to come out apologizing. Hopefully they correct these mistakes and sell actually refurbished & cleaned consoles going forward.
The prices could use some work, but there's not much you can do about that. It's their choice and they have a right to price their own way.

Actually, I do know for a fact that J.K. Rowling get paid royalties from this game. An article from Escapist with more details.

Onto the politics, and first off please don't refer to that bitch's prejudice as "politics". A budget for healthcare, interest rates, deciding what the appropriate punishment for drink drivers should be, that's politics. People being transgender or gay or whatever is not politics, or at least it shouldn't be. That's just people living thier lives in a way that doesn't hurt anyone. The whole "keep politics out games" thing come up from "Gamers" about the same things, usually referring to inclusion, but they wilfully ignore political undertones, and even overtones otherwise even though they come up all the time. I've said it before, good fiction always mirrors reality in order to connect with real world emotions and provoke real reactions. The social politics of fictional worlds, and not just in games, is the same. Some societies in fiction my be very progressive whereas other adhere more to tradition. Are they patriarchal, matriarchal, a dictatorship or a democracy? There's economies often described, with some societies being more capitalist and some more communist. Are there rich to poor gaps? Then thier is war and conflict and I don't I need to point out why that is a political overtone. These themes are very common themes in fiction and reflect our own world and it's history. If you don't want politics in games, don't play games, or at least not any game made since 1995.

You "keep politics out of games" rhetoric is actually very common, but for some reason, so called "gamers" only ever seem to object to politics in games whatever a character is black, gay, female or trans. Something that, like I said, shouldn't even be part of a discussion around politics in the first place. Even Harry Potter itself has themes and world elements, mostly in reference to social class, that's much closer to real and relatable politics than that. Your statement " I just want games to be games and not a political battleground", whether you know it or not, is a lie. The truth is you don't want games to to challenge your politics and remind you of your own prejudices and flaws held within what you believe. The world has to agree with you, and when it doesn't, you avoid it and insist that it's wrong, that what it's saying is not real and should be shunned.

Some people think it's wrong to support this game because of how you indirectly financially support a horrible person by doing so, whilst others are happy to support the game and judge it only on it's own merits, and I can understand either perspective. All I've said it that I can't support this game knowing that some of that money, even just a tiny little bit of it, will fall into that bitches pocket because I guarantee you she takes that she takes the success Happy Potter receives as a sign that her prejudiced, ignorant and dangerous views on LGBTQ+ people are being condoned. I'm not saying that anyone who buys this game are transphobic or homophobic by doing so, but you're not a friend to thier fight for what is basic human rights either. It may be a good game, perhaps even a great game and you have the right to enjoy the game without guilt, just don't claim to be a friend to the LGBTQ+ community if you do.

Oh absolutely, I do the same thing, but sometimes you pick up a game, know what it's going to be, and it can still be challenging, or more challenging than you were expecting, and that can throw you off at times.  You're right, though, it's best to go in knowing what's coming!

A favourite game definitely helps the mood.  A new game can go either way, depending on the game.  A challenging game can make me feel worse for not getting through it, but a fun game can make me forget about whatever was bothering me.

The modern consoles emulating the games are nice, but there is something to be said for playing classic games on classic hardware, that little extra nostalgia.

Yep, I absolutely understand where you're coming from!  Trying to stop buying to play catch up, only for another one to roll down the pipelines and...well...you've got to grab it!  That's how my backlog got so out of whack in the first place, and it just hasn't stopped :D.  Hopefully one day I'll get a bit of free time to sit down and get through a few of those games, have a bit of fun with them!

Correct, games we own and have not had the chance to get into, for one reason or another.  It happens over time, usually, but sneaks up on a lot of us until it becomes a bit overwhelming!
That is a very sizeable backlog, indeed!  It doesn't take much to become overwhelming! :)
