  1. Blockbuster passing up on Netflix looks really dumb now, but at the time, it didn’t look that crazy. I think Netflix was still only a mail order rental place, and who thought streaming would displace rental stores that quickly?

I think K-Mart buying Sears was dumb, it was a company on life support and bought another struggling company, and it ended up speeding up the decline of both.

That's something that more than pisses me off. I'm schizophrenic and seeing someone pretend to have it makes my blood boil. And to add insult to injury, typically they don't even get that right. So many people have it in their heads that schizophrenia is multiple personalities. IT'S FUCKING NOT. Schizophrenia is hearing voices and seeing things that shouldn't be there. I hear ghostly voices that say really freaky shit, and I see shadow people every damn day. Shadow people are some seriously annoying bastards.

But that I go through that shit, and someone pretending they have it for some idiotic reason makes me want to rip out their eyes and bust their ear drums. Then they wouldn't have to worry about seeing or hearing anything.

Also I'm on some really potent anti-psychotics for this. It's not something to be made light of. No mental disease is.

Yeah, Tumblr likes pretending it's like some weird role playing thing. "My headmates are Link, the 12th Doctor, and Goku, we have fun parties all the time". I'm not a doctor, but that sounds like someone larping to me.

Being autistic. I don't get what there is to be proud about it. Out-of-the-box thinking and creative writing are not points of pride when anything else I can do a neurotypical person can do better. I'm proud of how far treatment and understanding of autistic people has come, absolutely, but there's a lot of toxic positivity going on with autie pride that we don't appear too keen on stamping out.

I think some of that started off with trying to get you to not be ashamed of it, then people started taking it too far.

I remember seeing that for the first time on Tumblr about a decade ago. Though I do question the validity of those users, as they got a bit too out there, like pretending to have schizophrenia.

Indeed, having said that I try not to use the term aMeRiCaN aCcEnT because I try to pay as much common courtesy as I can by showing an interest in the person I'm speaking to.

Most of the time it's just damn fool ignorance, and it's not even true that America has one accent.

No, it doesn't offend me either per se, I just like different accents and seeing how different they are despite (in the case of Great Britain) the geographical distances. I suppose others don't share my same fascination.

I usually see people do it as a general nationality indicator from the Anglosphere. We hear a Brit speaking, we know he’s not Canadian or Australian.

Most Brits I see getting salty usually want us to recognize their various accents, but show no interest in ours. Apparently we need to know how to identify that someone’s from Birmingham or Manchester, but they don’t have to care that Michigan or Massachusetts have different accents.

    That hypocrisy always annoyed me.

Oh dear, I knew I'd find the phrase "British accent" in here. Never fails to grind my gears. Oh well!

To me it’s funny when I see Brits get salty about that, because the generic response is always “we have several accents!”, yet are adamant about using the term “American accent”.

I can’t tell if they’re being hypocritical by implying America has one accent, or if they’re trying to take a jab at us like “let’s see how you like it!”. Though it’s not that offensive.

Yeah I should have said the PS4, PS3 and then the PS2. I don't recall how many sales the PS1 had, but I'm sure it's up there as well. But yeah, It's crazy to think how fast the consoles have moved. Even with the Series X. I think it's partly due to covid and people being in doors. Plus I imagine some people used their stimulus checks to get the new consoles. Didn't the PS5 and Series X come out mid pandemic?

And on top of that, I think there are more people interested in gaming these days, so that could be a reason why sales have increased.

Yeah, they came out in the fall of 2020, like November iirc.

This is just crazy, the PS5 has now outsold the Nintendo Gamecube in sales. That's based off the Gamecube's lifetime sales. The PS5 has sold 21.83 million units worldwide as of this moment, and the Gamecube's sales reached 21.74 overall.

I never would have expected the PS5 to sell this fast. Soon enough it will catch up with the PS2 sales and then eventually the PS4 and maybe even the switch. I think the switch is higher up there right now, but I could be wrong.

Anyway, you can read about this news here - https://www.vgchartz.com/article/454508/ps5-outsells-nintendo-gamecube/

Your part about the sales of the PS2, PS4, and the Switch are implying that the PS4 and Switch outsold the PS2, which hasn't happened yet, as it's still at the #1 spot of best selling consoles by a decent margin.

Though to the original topic, in a way it is kind of surprising that the PS5 sold that quickly (due to how much of a pain it is to find), but the Gamecube wasn't known for selling that well either.

That's an interesting observation, my experience is the opposite unless we count used sales (which obviously don't have a tangible benefit to the publisher). Then again the last time I paid attention to the used market was about 8 years ago when I was still on console.

Some games I bought brand new for like $20-40 new at a place like GameStop or Best Buy and see it listed on PSN for $60 for quite awhile. So I personally find it weird when the digital copy stays at that price for so long, but the physical goes down quicker.

  9. My issues with digital distribution are more on the console side. A lot of this can by “bypassed” on the PC side.

If they remove a game from the store, you’re screwed, you’re not getting it back unless you jailbreak your console.

The physical copies tend to go down in price a lot faster than digital. People gloat about PSN sales and how those prices are why they went digital, yet I’m sitting here owning those same games I got for the same price (or less) on disc a long time ago.

it’s also crazy how I got some games a few years ago for $20 that are still being listed as $60 online.

Well, we are in a rollercoaster of change and everything is under it's influence, technology needs to be updated regularly to remain relevant and I perfectly understand that.

Maybe its almost time we move on and have a much better system software juts like how 5G is Rapidly replacing 4G.

I initially thought it was too early to discontinue, then I looked at when Windows 10 came out and went “oh… it has been out awhile…”

  11. 5 hours ago, Clasher said:

Windows 10 is still working as much as it is supposed to, Maybe Microsoft should reconsider their move as there are still people using Windows 7 and windows 8.

So what would be the faith of those system software.

Windows 7 and 8 haven’t been supported for years, and 8.1 won’t be once January rolls around. Windows 10 will be 10 years old in 2025 when Microsoft pulls the plug.

You have to consider the age of the operating system, and the updates that get pushed to you are security updates. You can only patch something for so long or so much before you gotta let it go.

When you’re not connecting the device to the internet, it’s not a big deal. When you are connected, you have malware to worry about, and that is always changing and evolving.

Gameplay wise i'd say the whole turn based battle system had to grow on me , when i played my first jrpg i had no idea what the hell i was supposed to do, meanly due to the language barrier but overtime as my english got better and i became a little older i started getting more and more into jrpg's.

(Overly long) tutorials also grew on me, sure some can be annoying but they are there to teach the basics of the game and explain the controls. Especially now that we don't get manuals with our physical games anymore i'd say i've started to appreciate them more and more.

My only issue with tutorials is when some games want to explain really stupid stuff to you. I understand when some tutorials can be "obvious" for veterans of a franchise, but is nice for newbies. Though some games like some of the Xenoblade games get really silly. I've never seen an RPG give you a tutorial on how to purchase items at a store, or how to equip equipment before.

I was initially thinking "maybe they've got a ton of stuff in the store or equipment that needs explanation". Nope, it tells you "select the item you want to purchase, press A, and if you truly want to purchase it, press A to confirm". "Select equipment, select the piece of armor you want to equip, select A".

Wow, never would have figured this out if I didn't have a tutorial.

I'm not sure. While there are many who use overrated in a way to call something bad, I don't think it's the majority of the internet. I think there are a lot of people out there who use the word the other way. But I get what you're saying. A lot of people use the word wrong.

I tend to see overrated as a synonym for bad as the default across the internet.

In the gaming community, it’s used more commonly towards the popular games, as those tend to also get high ratings. The music and film community reserves it for critical darlings, as the popular stuff doesn’t tend to get good reviews.

I've got a headset that I've been thinking of using for a podcast, but haven't tried it as of yet. I don't know where to go or how to do it so that people could find it. Is it something I would do over YouTube? I don't know where the hell to broadcast from, or how to do it in the first place. That's been my problem this whole time. I don't know how or where to broadcast. Otherwise I probably would have started one up. Also i wouldn't be on cam, only on audio, so I would have to come up with something to deal with that.

You can do it on Youtube, or you can look at one of these sites:

    https://www.wix.com/blog/2018/11/podcast-hosting-sites/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=12188669214^114296906861&experiment_id=^^530595868227^^_DSA&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIzrrq072y-QIVA8LCBB1x5QvtEAAYASAAEgKG3fD_BwE

You don't have to do the show live, you can just record it and, then upload it somewhere. With Youtube you just need to make it into a video format, which isn't hard. You just need to get use some basic video editor, and add an image over the entire recording, and you're good to go.

    That's true

This could be sentimental and at the same time patronising.

And that's why I stated that those words could be used by Satisfied or dissatisfied gamer to demerit or praise a particular video game they think sucks or felt it was really good.

I always thought it was silly the way people say stuff like “overrated trash”. It feels more inauthentic or try hard than just saying “it’s trash”.

It gives off this feeling like they’re trying to be rebellious and braggadocious.

Just because someone says a game is overrated or overhyped, doesn't mean they hate it. It could just mean they enjoyed it, but felt it wasn't as fun as what people made it out to be. I think when people say overrated, it's like with COD. It's a great game for what it does, but can often be said to be overrated. I wouldn't say COD is overhyped, because if anything, it has its place in the gaming world and fans know what they're getting. But I do view it as overrated because even though I find it fun at times, I feel it hasn't changed enough to make it a good COD game. Does that make sense?

If you look at my other posts in this thread, I agree with you over the meanings. I'm telling you what most of the internet likes to think it means. It's always used in disdain towards anything popular, or critically acclaimed. They talk about how terrible it is, and add the extra spice of "it's overrated", like it makes it sound like an educated opinion.

If so many people didn't think overrated = bad, I (or others) wouldn't be questioned by people so much when I say "wait, how can you like something that you think is overrated?"

  17. 3 hours ago, Clasher said:

I know they aren't synonymous but they are used interchangeably In some cases because an overhyped game usually sells well which then becomes overrated if gamers are not satisfied with what they got.

I didn't follow up much on Zelda, but I have a couple of folks who thinks  Zelda BOTW is a massive success which deserves all accolades and hype and hence my question as it often a matter of personal observation and not general to say a game is either overhyped, overated and underated.

what others might categorize as overrated or underated might not be the same for another.

Another reason why it’s interchanged a lot is because a lot of people throw those terms around as a “fancy” way to say something popular/well regarded sucks. Apparently it adds more “oomph” if you say it’s overrated/overhyped than just flat out saying you think something sucks.
