Every company on Earth always go for something more productive for them first, before considering other things. But it should go together with your customers choice, if your customers aren't satisfied with your products, such is diminishing to the company's long term project.

Customers preferences is something that's going to keep on changing from time to time. Unless, then they have to be up to date in what they make.

And all the video games companies that require to get the best from their customers would keep up with knowing what their users desire.

When you don't other exactly what your customers need, they may likely switch brand but it's not always that way with games.

Yes, customers choice is always there, even if the reviewers say heaven and Earth about a particular game I wouldn't still get moved when the trailer or other reviews are negative about it.
