What makes for a good MMO community?

What do you think makes for a rewarding and engaging community in an MMO?

I really only have experience with MUDs, but I would generally just say that when people talk to each other and show an active interest in each other, that makes for a great experience, even if they do not all get along.

Ones that don't alienate their audience, and ones that are more chill and don't force players to play a certain way. Most MMOs for me, have been pretty good, but I have had issues with people in the past. The audience can sometimes be a pain to deal with when it comes to MMOs in general.

A good MMO community is a community free of gamers who make trouble. A community that helps one another and all that fun stuff.

Yesterday I'd gotten into Josh Strife Hayes' videos, and he was talking about why there'll never be another World of Warcraft. One reason being that MMOs are no longer required to be their players' "forever game" like WoW was (and for some still is). However, I still think that forever games are the best and if you can design it in such a way that people want to log in each day and socialise, rather than feel they have to group up for content, you'll see a difference. People will communicate not out of necessity but leisure, and if they can do content that is leisurely they'll be much more likely to chat away doing so.

Take fishing in games: you're waiting for a meter to run down until something bites. You've nothing else better to do than either listen to YouTube or Netflix in the background or talk to the person next to you. Not necessarily because it's boring but because it's a relaxing activity that interfaces well with communication. I found some of my best conversations in MMOs were when I was doing light activity: training cooking, fishing, or other professions. If I was farming reputation, I'd have nothing else better to do than strike up conversation.

Last I checked World of Warcraft still has a system that basically gives you a time limit for conversation: you'll only converse so long as you've got some hub to clear, some dailies to see to, and perhaps a Looking for Raid (LFR) reward to claim. Once you've done that, it's time to play another better game and ergo stop engaging with that community. When you've got activities that take a while and you can sink hours at a time into doing it, that's when the community experience shines.

In conclusion, the best games that make for a good MMO community give people a reason to engage with one another without feeling forced. It's not enough to just produce group content, but at the same time players have to make the effort to be courteous and take time out to help others enjoy the game.

You don't build MMORPGs to please a community. You build an MMORPG to create a world and people will hopefully come to enjoy it with you. Outside of that the other important point is to have a relatively smooth launch. There isn't anything faster that will doom a game, than having a month of instability after release.

These days smooth launches are a thing of the past lol. At least when it comes to big studios these days, it seems like with each new big release with an online mode, it always suffers some instability or problems. COD, Battlefield etc all seem to have rocky starts with their games. With MMOs I imagine they're much of the same in terms of starting their online worlds. Of course many of them when starting out, have to deal with an influx of users jumping on, which is to be expected, but when the games are broken as well, is when fans really take notice.

It's a fact that you can't be able to please everyone at the same time, so I'm of the opinion that a good MMO community should be one where there's objectivity in how things are done. Whenever it comes to decision making, there shouldn't be any element of bias.

I understand the fact that you can't please everyone in a given MMO community. Some users can't be so bad even if you try to act polite with them. And some are cheaters trying to cheat and win any given contest you entered with them. That's why I'm not too active when it comes to massive multiplayer online games and it's community.

Another thing I like about a good gaming community, it that some come together to help each other out. It makes me happy when people in these games, help out noobs or give people much needed items to help them get through the game fatser. A community that helps each other is an awesome one indeed.

It doesn't take away the possibility of having a dick head being part of such community because I have seen and been in one where the dick feels like he's the almighty who knows it all and is better than everyone else in the community.

I don't like MMO's that compel members to play in a certain way, everyone could have a different style but should be able to maintain a friendly atmosphere instead making a lot trouble.

A chill environment where everyone share their views and are given their dues respect is a very good feature of an MMO.

And if they can't make an environment that's chill for gamers, maybe allow us to set up our own private lobbies, servers, games, etc. Allow us to have a mode where people can't attack you. I know you can turn on a passive mode in GTA V for example, which allows you to play the game without anyone bothering you. You also can't shoot other players, which is perfect.

I hope MMOs have a passive mode where you can be free from any conflict with other online players. I think that would solve a lot when it comes to griefing and people attempting to kill you every five minutes.

It's crazy out here and a few of them is just a hell hole and everyone is the villian, they could literally perceive you as week when you aren't as aggressive as others and then you become the target. Lol

MMO'S are fun in various levels but a more chill environment would be much appreciated.

It's more like being under the control of rigid system and that's not fun at all. You wouldn't be able to express your gameplay the best way it suits you. There's no atom of satisfaction that comes with being in that kind of community. If that's the only way to play, I'd gladly walk out in peace.

MMO'S  are games where a lot of Players could join and play online like final fantasy and the likes and it's fun to play but some players can be very disrespectful and that's could be found anywhere you have people come together online.

I enjoy MMO'S as much as I do for any other kind of game but sometimes the players makes it a lot more terrible to be on.
