Moonface Posted October 21, 2022 Share Posted October 21, 2022 Source: https://www.talkesport.com/news/gaming/miniclip-has-officially-shut-down-its-servers-except-for-8-ball-pool-and-agario/ I thought at first Miniclip as a whole was basically going away barring 8 Ball Pool and Agario, but it turns out they've shut down the servers for their web-based games and are shifting focus entirely to their mobile gaming ventures, which have been successful for them as the death of Flash gradually killed off what I expect a lot of people grew up with. Did anyone here ever use Miniclip at any point? If so, what memories or stories do you have to tell from it? I adored this place back when Flash games were all the rage. My school would even unblock the website on Sponsor Day for us to play games on there if that was one of the activities we chose to do for that day, and it was always one of the most popular choices for that day. I'm trying to find a list of all the games they had that were exclusive to them so I can see what ones I played a lot of, but haven't had any luck yet. I hope the games they had were at least preserved by one of those Flash game preservation groups that are out there. I used to love Miniclip's web browser games back in the day, but the company that exists now barley resembles the one I loved. From a creative and vibrant company putting out fun, if slightly basic, web browser games to the publisher of some of the worst and most predatory free-to-play mobile games out there that, if anything, play worse than thier flash games. Trust me, I'd tried a number of them and they're all the same 1v1 multiplayer titles loaded with pay-to-win lootboxes. I have no doubt they're making a lot more money through the mobile gaming venture than they ever could have with thier browser games, but they're complete scum now. It sucks that a lot of the goodwill the name Miniclip has is mostly from the game submissions of people who never even worked for them, and it got used to pump out predatory games. I feel like they could have at least just stored downloads of all the games so people can get them that way rather than having them playable on their servers, since it would probably take up considerably less space and at least give them something decent to go back for from time to time. I can't imagine their model will be very sustainable without new prey coming in, and I've honestly never heard or seen of any of their mobile games before which makes me wonder if they're actually easy to find outside of their website or not. Thier mobile games are hard to find. They're all over The Play Store and I assume it's a similar story on the Apple Store as well. Not that I recommend them, obviously, avoid them like the plague. Another thing I've thought about that may even be the worst thing about this is without the flash games that made the Miniclip name, now they're just another mobile publisher putting out nothing better than the typical mobile dross that every other ass-hole mobile game company is doing. I remember playing a ton of Stick RPG where you started working in a McDonalds kind of place and you had to manage different stats, bit like The Sims. And this has happened to several companies over the years that has refused to adapt to a rapidly changing and find creative ways to stay relevant. There was this helicopter game I used to play all the time, those were the days. But with most things in life, eventually, they'll fade into obscurity. Eventually they would be a replacement but some could be avoided by finding innovative ways to stay relevant and remain in the market just like rockstar studios has done over the years.
