So the PS5 IS going to be backwards compatible with PS1/PS2 and PS3... Sort of

Recommended Posts

https://www.notebookcheck.net/PS5-backwards-compatibility-Likely-PS-Now-patent-invigorates-debate-on-whether-Cerny-s-PlayStation-5-BC-graphic-was-deliberately-incomplete.480817.0.html

So a recent patent suggests you will be able to play your old PS1, PS2 and PS3 games on the up and coming Playstation 5, but it's integrated in the PS Now streaming service or a virtual console rather than the on board hardware itself.  Now it's worth keeping in mind that this is only a patent so it might not mean anything, big companies file patents all the time without it making it into a final product so take it with a grain of salt.  It's also not quite clear whether it would require a subscription to PS Now, a digital purchase or the original disc for authentication.

What do you think?  Is this real backwards compatibility?  Will Sony put your old games behind a paywall on the PS5?  Discuss!

I think it's a good idea, in theory. But in all honesty, with the exception of classic gamers, who really plays PS1/PS2PS3 games anymore? The few that have been remastered are an exception to this question. I don't see it being beneficial in any way with the exception of us classic gamers. There are very few people who even know what the game DarkStone is. And in all honesty how many really remember The Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver? As much as I hate to admit it, it's a wasted effort.

They didn't even put a CD player in the PS4 and it offered no reverse play. So why would they do it with the PS5 is what I want to know. It's just not going to do Sony any good from what I can see, unless they offer the ENTIRE LIBRARY OF GAMES from all systems. That's thousands of games. It would cost so much that Sony would completely lose out, and the PS5 may be the end of PlayStation. It's not financially a good idea or investment.

honestly being backwards compatible is cool an all , but who actually has all that many ps (aything but 4) discs that aren't completely fuckin jacked up.I know I have a total of zero i think my brother ,whom owns a ps3, has like six . lol

no one owns shit anymore its all just on the cloud and we pay to access it . so cross compatible past four is what ever to most people. but if they made it so everything before four was free for download shit they'd take x-box our for one . and for two they'd buy all of the game companies time to have to release exclusive games giving us the best possible gaming experience. specially since all i ever hear from the industry is the massive amount of hours they have to put in to make games come out fast enough . the whole industry sounds (and if you look at some of these shitty games) seem rushed if they had more time i feel like we'd see some really cool shit come out.

I still play on cartridges and discs. And I'm not referring to current gen systems. I'm talking about Atari/NES/SNES/ N64/ PS1/PS3/ GBASP etc. I'm a classic gamer. But none of that flashback bullshit. I play the real god damn thing. And I have an enormous library of games, if you include all the games I have, including current gen systems. Well this is just for the systems I play. I'm not including my Game Cube, Wii, PS2, or Xbox 360 games, as I don't play those anymore.

Here's the list:

Collectively one person may not own all of the old tech but distributed way there are many people who own random PS version. so that is what makes them push the compatibilty issues through that.

Seriously, the idea carry on those PS1 to PS3 games seem nice but I don't really think if it's worth the stress.

I wish it took old discs, got so many PS1 and PS2 games gathering dust. But oh well, as long as we can keep playing PS4 games.

Are those Playstation 1 and 2 disc of yours still in good condition? I really doubt mine are in good playing condition.

Most haven't been open since 2010 but yeah they are in good condition, I take care of my stuff.

If that's the case then, there is absolutely nothing for you to worry about as they are most likely still going to be in good playing condition.

I do have something to worry, I really can't play them, I'm sure my PS2 won't work.
