Do you consider Esports a sport?

Recommended Posts

For people that can move around and compete physically, esports wouldn't be considered a sport. For handicapped, there are sports out there for them, maybe not in all arenas, but who is to say that can't be possible. For bed ridden people, esports can be considered a sport for them. And think about the future of VR systems and esports.

A new fantastic point of view
No one to tell us "No"
Or where to go
Or say we're only dreaming"

I'm gonna take it a step further and say war is a sport. It's competitive, you need physical skill and endurance and training. You need tactical skill from the ranks. The fat cats watch it all snacking on grapes and wine placing bets and skillful plots to destabilize regions. Other countries can join in on the competition. There really isn't a known schedule for war, so there's no olympics for it. Lots of hype and cold wars though flexing military arsenals and holding war games. Today, we can watch it unfold on tv or iPhones till the country blacks out all communications.

War is not competition, it's conflict. There's a big difference.

And as I pointed out earlier, being a physical challenge does not make something a sport on it own (like pro-wrestling, for example) it's about completion. I've pushes examples Golf, Snooker, Darts and I suppose you can count professional chess in that as well. It these sports, and they are sports, the challenge is not physical, it's a mixture of wits, strategy, skill, experience, teamwork, things that's matter in other more physical sports as well. So one can't discount them with discounting Boxing, Football, Soccer. Esports is, once again, no different.

But don't countries compete on who owns resources? That in itself creates the conflict. That conflict being a move in the game. They compete in growing their arsenal, spy games, making their currency more powerful or less powerful, and influence of democracy, fascism, communism, socialism, or whatever it may be. To us it's conflict cause we carry the burden. To those at the top, it  just may be considered a sport. Profit, resources, land, religion, politics; they don't exploit it without conflict as part of the strategy. So if we can debate chess being a sport, then why not actual war as a sport?

That's not about completion, that's about power and control, but I'm not going to go on and you try to detail yet another thread towards politics.

You're trying to blur some very clear lines here. If I tried hard enough I could define cooking at a sport or even an act of political aggression, but it's not. You're a smart enough person to know what the clear differences are. Political motivations for conflict have to do with the subject at hand. Please stick to that.

Personally, sport involves physical exercise for me. eSports or things like chess exercise your mind, but that isn't really sport. They should be categorised differently to 'sport'. Just my 2 cents.
