Do you have friends/family who say video games are for kids?

Recommended Posts

Do you have those friends and family who judge you because you enjoy video games? Like the whole "eh, games are for kids, you're an adult, you should be doing adult things". I find it extremely hypocritical when people judge me for being into video games, when half the time they watch reality tv, watch sports on tv, read books, watch movies and tv, listen to music, etc. It's a hobby that I enjoy, and I see no issue with it.

Anyway, do you have family and friends who're like this?

They call anyone who plays video games a gamer like it's an immature thing. But I don't call them a tv watcher. I don't call them a reader. I don't call them an internet surfer. And all those so called adults that watched something like the Game of Thrones fantasy series or the new Witcher series on tv, well, welcome to entertainment bitches.

There was a time when video games were toys. From video games very earliest inceptions in very late 60's-early 70's all the way up to early-mid 90's calling them video games toys would have been accurate. Even companies like Nintendo and SEGA existed for decades as toy makers before they ever made a video game or a console.

However, I believe it was around 1994-1995 is when it all changed and video were very suddenly not toys any more and for a very specific reason. Things like this stated to appear on game boxes;

This is when video stopped being toys and became an entertainment medium alongside movies, TV shows, literature and music. And just like those other aspects of entertainment media, some is made for young children, some are made for adults and everyone in between.

So, anyone who says "video games are for kids" are about 25 years out of sync. When you tell them video games are not toys, it's not you as a 20-30 something trying to justify a "juvenile" hobby, it's just the truth. Of course, it's always the same people who say "Video games are kids' toys" that also say "There's too much violence/sex/drugs" and so on in these games. Well Karen, if you let precious little Jimmy plays GTA and you get shocked and shaken at all the gun killing, naughty words and lap-dancing boobies, you've got nobody to blame but yourself and you lack of understanding. You wouldn't sit precious little Jimmy in front of a mature rated movie, you why let him play a mature rated video game?

Some games definitely are for kids. I can't play rayman considering I prefer other matured games. If you are in that context then yes games do follow age specific gameplay and stories. But gaming as a hobby is age agnostic and it's duty of our generation to clean the stereotypes around it.

Exactly! I think it's because people don't know how advanced games have gotten, so they still think it's for kids. Or they've never had time with an actual game. I remember playing Call of Duty in front of my aunt, who is often judgmental on that sort of stuff. But she was kind of mesmerized how real it looked. She didn't call it a toy after that. I think once they see what games are capable of, they realize it's not for kids and realize it's not a "toy".

You have to have family and friends before you can hear this kind of idiocy. But I have heard this argument before. And @Shagger is exactly right. That's why we have ratings on games now. You wouldn't give a 5 year old a copy of Conker's Bad Fur Day just because it has a cute squirrel on the cover, so it has to be for kids. Well when the kid is bouncing off a sunflowers tits, maybe you will think twice before calling a game system a child's toy. Even Atari was doing it with Custer's Revenge in 1982. Look at the fucking ratings people. There are games directed at the 5 year old demographic, and games directed at the adult demographic. Not all of them are pornographic. Some are gory, some are cutesy. Some are nightmare inducing, some are calming and soothing. You have to look into what the plot and story is. If I had kids, I wouldn't let my ten year old play Call Of Duty, but I would have no problem with them playing Castlevania. Just because they need to understand the difference between fiction and nonfiction. CoD is too realistic for what I would want my child exposed to at that age. Castlevania, is obviously a fictitious story. So as long as my child was able to enjoy the game, and it had no mental/emotional effects on him/her/neither/both then I would be fine with that.

What parents need to understand is that there are ratings for a reason, and you have to make a responsible decision. When you do that, then it can be called a toy for the younger demographic, but it's not for the older.

Let the VR games come in. Let the VR turn second life, Sims type stuff into reality. People will forget real life and crave for VR like drugs. Mark my words. Then parents will be so busy in VR world that they wont even remember they had kids lol.

I don't really see VR turning people into addicts though. I can see a few people here and there, but from what I hear, wearing a VR headset for extended hours isn't easy on the head and neck, as well I know people tend to get headaches if they're in for too long. I can't say how it is yet, as I have never got the chance to use VR, but I imagine it does get tiring to wear that headset after a while.

I suppose the possibility of this happening in the future is high though, especially if they can make future headsets more lightweight.

Tell grandpa his gambling is for kids. And smack that crossword puzzle away from grandma. No more sweets either. How the table flips.

lol right? They claim that video games are childish and waste of time, but they'll be reading a book, or watching that dumb reality tv show they love. It's so hypocritical of them when they claim we're the children.
