Generation Zero Gets an In-Depth Gameplay Trailer

During this year’s E3 conference, Just Cause series creator Avalanche Studios unveiled its newest project: an open-world co-op shooter called Generation Zero in which players use guerrilla tactics to fight against a highly sophisticated robot threat in an alternative version of 1980’s Sweden. Specific gameplay details were scarce during the initial reveal, but now Avalanche has unveiled an in-depth gameplay trailer that shows just how dangerous Generation Zero’s world will be.

Check out Generation Zero's gameplay.

The trailer starts out by briefly touching on information we already knew. Generation Zero is set in the Swedish countryside in the year 1989, and player assume the role of young adults who have returned from a remote getaway only to discover their home has been occupied by a hostile robot presence. Players will be able to create their own customized characters before setting out to combat the occupying robots either alone or via seamless co-op with up to three other players.

Generation Zero’s world will be highly persistent, which means not only that it will have day/night cycles and various weather conditions, but that robot foes will bear the scars of their previous engagements with players. If a robot is attacked but not killed, it will be more highly alert and might even stick around searching for its attackers hours, days, and even weeks (of in-game time) after the initial engagement. Players, meanwhile, can use stealth, firearms, explosives, and various distraction tools to gain the upper hand, and if they can disable a robot without damaging it too much, they’ll be able to scavenge it for parts needed to upgrade their arsenals.

While Generation Zero doesn’t yet have a final release date, Avalanche is currently planning to release it for both PC and consoles sometime in 2019. Also, thanks to a recent partnership with THQ Nordic, Avalanche’s upcoming co-op shooter will also be getting a worldwide physical release when it launches.
