God of War Sets Sales Record for the Series in the UK

The latest entry in the God of War franchise has already received “universal acclaim,” according to Metacritic, and sales figures from the UK have now revealed that the title has set another significant new record for the series.

According to data for just the first few days of God of War’s physical sales in the UK, the game has already broken records. The title outsold its predecessor, 2010’s God of War III, by around 35%. Considering the fact that digital sales figures have seen a significant upwards trend in recent years compared to physical sales, it seems likely that God of War’s digital sales will also outstrip those of previous entries in the franchise. As a result, that 35% figure could be much higher in actuality, giving the game an even more significant lead over the series’ previous bestselling entry.

Review scores rank God of War as the second-highest-rated PS4 game of all time (tied with The Last of Us: Remastered), and the highest-rated game of 2018 on any platform. Considering that, combined with the game’s pedigree, sales figures were always likely to be high. Of course, high ratings do not always equate to high sales figures. In this instance, however, it seems Santa Monica Studio’s return to the franchise has achieved unprecedented success on both fronts.

Figures for the best-selling titles in the UK for the week ending April 21st were:

  1. God of War
  2. Far Cry 5
  3. Yakuza 6: The Song of Life
  4. FIFA 18
  5. Mario Kart 8: Deluxe
  6. Super Mario Odyssey
  7. Fallout 4
  8. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds
  9. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  10. Grand Theft Auto V

Despite God of War’s success, Far Cry 5 still holds the title of the UK’s biggest launch of 2018. Ubisoft’s open-world game was the best-selling title in the country for three consecutive weeks before being displaced by God of War. However, it is worth remembering that Far Cry 5 is available on Xbox One, PS4, and PC, whereas God of War is available solely on the PS4. As a result, the game’s PS4 sales figures could well exceed those of Far Cry 5 by a significant margin.
