GTA 6 Rumour Suggests That the Game May be More Than Halfway Done

Recently, a detailed Kotaku report on the internal culture at Rockstar dashed the hopes of GTA fans when it suggested that the studio’s next major project (widely believed to be GTA 6) is only in the early stages of development. Now, a prominent Rockstar insider who is known for leaking info is claiming that the game is actually between 60 and 70% complete.

How Far Along is GTA 6 Development Really?

This new information comes from Tez 2, a prominent source of leaks and information relating to Rockstar Games. Following the release of the Kotaku report, which indicates that GTA 6 is in early development, Tez 2 noted; “It’s hard to believe that when I’m hearing it’s ‘halfway done’ or even beyond that.”

GTA 6 Rumour Halfway Done 2

While this may be encouraging to some, this statement should be taken with a grain of salt. It is of course possible that the first report was citing information relating to GTA 6 which may have been out-of-date. (The report was detailing 18 months of Rockstar internal development, after all). However, it is nonetheless a much more reliable source of information than an anonymous Twitter account whose info is unverifiable; indeed, the report may well be the most reliable source of GTA 6 info to have been released in months.

It’s also possible that both statements are correct to some degree. Game development can take years, especially for major triple-A titles. Even if GTA 6 is indeed halfway complete, it could still be 2-3 years away from its actual release. Given that timespan, it’s possible (if unlikely) that Rockstar could make an announcement sometime this year. More likely is the possibility of a 2021 announcement. However, with GTA Online still performing incredibly well, it’s more likely that Rockstar will focus on promoting new GTA 5 content until they are closer to the end of development. After all, the studio doesn’t need to announce GTA 6 or rush development; their existing properties are more than profitable enough for them to take their time.
