Next week, Respawn will be launching Chaos Theory, the first Collection Event of Apex Legends Season 8. Coming as part of the event will be an all-new in-game item, which will remain in the game after the end of the event; Heat Shields. These items have their own new inventory slot and let players do something they’ve never been able to do before.
What to Expect From the Apex Legends Heat Shields
The primary purpose of a Heat Shield is to provide players with a temporary safe haven while outside the Ring. This should be especially useful in Ring Fury, the variant game mode playable during the Chaos Theory event. In Ring Fury, ‘Ring Flares’ will spawn on the map, functioning as reverse Ring areas. While the Ring itself closes in from without, Ring Flares appear and slowly expand outwards, forming damaging bubbles within the normally-safe area.
When players throw down a Heat Shield, it creates a protective bubble which blocks out the damage of the Ring. If you’re not outside the Ring, the shield simply waits inert, but activates automatically once it passes out of the Ring. The shield will then slowly degrade until it collapses. While the Heat Shield does offer players temporary protection, it also gives players the chance to recover. While the Shield is active outside of the Ring, it grants two major buffs to players inside the bubble. Players will be able to Revive 25% faster and also use healing items 50% faster.
In Ring Fury, Heat Shields will appear fairly frequently. Once the Chaos Theory event ends, it will remain in the game as general ground loot. So that you don’t have to choose between a Heat Shield and other utility items, a Heat Shield will occupy a new “Survival” inventory slot. This Survival Slot is also a permanent addition to Apex Legends, providing a space for carrying a single Heat Shield.
