Marvel’s Spider-Man Stays On Top Of UK Sales Charts, Slapping Down Tomb Raider

Marvel’s Spider-Man has, to put it bluntly, had an incredibly successful launch. First revealed at E3 2017, the game was one of the most anticipated titles for 2018.

Thankfully, Insomniac Games delivered a high-quality product and gamers have been rewarding the company with massive sales numbers. The latest UK charts show that Spider-Man has once again taken the top spot in last week’s rankings.

That’s an impressive feat considering two rather big franchises launched a week ago. Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the finale in the series reboot managed to take the second spot in the rankings but that is a decidedly disappointing debut.

While Shadow is up 25 percent over its immediate Tomb Raider predecessor, it’s down by more than 70 percent in first week sales to the first game in the reboot. It should also be pointed out that Rise of the Tomb Raider was an Xbox One exclusive, limiting sales numbers quite a bit.

Shadow is a multiplatform release that has seen more sales on the PS4 than Xbox One but the extra consoles haven’t given it the boost developers expected. That’s what makes the reign at the top of the charts for Spider-Man that much more impressive.

Spidey is only available on the PS4 but is still beating off all comers. That includes NBA2K19 which debuted in the third spot in the UK rankings in its release week.

The NBA2K series is usually incredibly popular but has also had some problems getting traction out of the gate. NBA2k19 is debuting one spot lower than it did a year ago, though that could simply be a matter of having better competition in 2018 than it faced in 2017.

Spider-Man is setting itself up as a bit of a sales Goliath, seeing just a 42 percent drop from week one. Those numbers have the webbed-wallcrawler looking like it could overshadow the sales numbers for another massive PS4 exclusive, God of War.

All of this is only good news for Insomniac Games who seems to have done a great job tailoring their release to what the fans are looking for in Spider-Man. That includes working on a soon to arrive patch that will deliver a New Game Plus mode.
