NBA 2K20 Cover Athlete Predictions: Five Players Who Could Grace the Game’s Cover

Last September, the NBA 2K19 video game officially arrived to the masses, giving gamers the newest basketball title. It’s now been in rotation for nearly a year, as September 2019 is quickly approaching. That means EA will announce the official cover athlete ahead of the game’s launch. For 2K19, the Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo was on the standard edition while LeBron James was on the special edition of the game. Now as the new edition of the game approaches, here are some NBA 2K20 cover athlete predictions for the potential star.

NBA 2K20 Cover Athlete Predictions: Top candidates

“The Greek Freak” could be on his way to winning the NBA MVP Award, which is a good sign for whoever graces the new game’s cover. Since Giannis scored the 2K19 cover, it seems fitting that someone new will be the official NBA 2K20 cover athlete. 2K18 saw Kyrie Irving on the United States game’s cover and DeMar DeRozan on the Canadian game’s front. For 2K17, it was Paul George on the regular edition. Stephen Curry graced 2K16’s cover.

That leaves room open for the 2K20 cover. It’d be hard to start off this predictions list without considering LeBron James. The new 2K20 game could feature the man who is considered the game’s best player in recent history. Not only that, it would be his debut on the standard edition of the game in a Los Angeles Lakers jersey. His season was criticized heavily, though, and his 18 games sidelined with injury made his debut in Los Angeles seem lackluster to some. However, one has to believe King James will be on a mission for the next season.

Another superstar to consider up there with LeBron James is the Golden State Warriors’ Kevin Durant. He was a cover star on NBA 2K13 but shared the cover with Derrick Rose and Blake Griffin. It’s entirely possible that the 2K20 cover will have “KD” exclusively on it this year. After all, he’s become the league’s toughest scorer and a multiple-time champion. Another NBA Finals win for the Warriors will further cement his legacy.

A third top contender for the NBA 2K20 cover athlete is James Harden. He was the featured cover star for NBA Live 19, but as the reigning NBA MVP and scoring champion, he could make his way onto the front of 2K20’s packaging. Harden is amongst the top three contenders for NBA MVP along with Giannis and Paul George, so one has to think he’s eligible for this.

Two young stars who could be featured on NBA 2K20

The future of the NBA is bright based on the rising young stars in the league. That includes this past year’s rookie stars Trae Young and Luka Doncic. Both of these guys seem like potential cover athletes as they are new additions in the NBA 2K19 Generation Next packs. However, the fanfare surrounding Doncic was pretty impressive in his debut season.

Seeing the international star grace the cover of the United States game wouldn’t be a stretch. After all, Giannis hails from Greece and claimed 2K19’s cover. Luka is from Slovenia and should be an All-Star for many years during his upcoming NBA career.

However, NBA 2K20 could go for the guy who many consider the biggest talent coming into the league since LeBron James. That is the expected No. 1 draft pick, Zion Williamson. The Duke Blue Devils star will go whichever team is holding the top pick in June’s draft. As of right now, it’s the New Orleans Pelicans so the 2K20 game could feature the NBA’s brightest new rookie front and center. With the amount of potential he has to take the game to a new level, it wouldn’t be surprising at all if Zion is this year’s “chosen one.”

Our five picks are LeBron James, Kevin Durant, James Harden, Luka Doncic, or Zion Williamson. Honorable mention goes to Kawhi Leonard and Russell Westbrook.

We expect the NBA 2K20 cover athlete announcement by early July, ahead of the game’s anticipated release in September. No matter who lands the cover, we’re expecting another exciting edition of the popular basketball title.
