The alley-oop pass helps get the ball up in the vicinity of your dunker so they can score with ease or make a statement. With this guide, learn how to use NBA 2K22 passing to throw an alley-cop pass for a rim-rattling dunk.

What is an alley-oop pass in basketball?

Over the many years of the NBA, fans have witnessed plenty of great alley-oop passes for dunks. They’ve included the Sonics’ Gary Payton lobbing it up for Shawn Kemp, the Heat’s LeBron James and Dwyane Wade connecting, or the Thunder’s Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant. Lonzo Ball has also thrown quite a few alley-oops for dunks and been on the receiving end of them.

The play involves whichever player has the ball tossing it up for another player to throw down the dunk. The trick is making sure the player getting the ball is able to catch it close enough to complete a dunk. So making an accurate pass so that your other player is able to get to the ball is key.

As seen in the highlights video above, alley-oops typically happen when a team is rushing the ball up court and a player is ahead of the defenders. Or, they happen as an offensive player quickly cuts towards the paint and has a good chance to catch the ball and dunk it.

How to use NBA 2K22 passing to throw an alley-oop pass

The alley-oop is available to use during all modes of NBA 2K22. You can perform the alley-oop in NBA 2K22 passing very easily too. When you’re handling the ball and see a player you want to throw an alley-oop pass to, simply double-tap the Triangle button on the PS4 controller. For Xbox controllers, double-tap the Y button.

Alley-oop pass: Double-Tap Triangle (PS4)/ Y (Xbox) and use Left Stick to choose/guide player you pass to.

Right after double-tapping the Triangle/Y button, use the Left Stick on your controller to select the player you’re throwing the alley-oop pass to. This is easier when there’s only one player near the basket, but if there’s more than one you may not complete an alley-oop dunk if you throw to someone a bit too far from the basket.

Alley-oop passes can work great on fast breaks as all the players are rushing to get back on defense. If you’ve got a player who is ahead of the group, consider using the alley-oop. It also works great in mismatches in the paint or if you see a defender move away from your big man near the rim.

Keep in mind, alley-oop passes may not always result in a dunk. Sometimes the player will simply tap the ball into the hoop or make the simple layup off the backboard. However, with enough practice, you’ll have your players able to alley-oop dunk whenever necessary.
