Ohio University Offers Scholarship For Skilled Fortnite Players

If you’re a student and spending hours in Fortnite already, you may not be wasting time like your parents may have said. You may be training for your future career — at least if you live in Ohio. Ashland University in Ohio has just become the first school to offer a scholarship for expert Fortnite players.

Of course, this didn’t just happen out of the blue. Ashland is one school out of a few dozen in the United States that also features a varsity esports program, with competitions between other schools coming down the pipeline. Previously, it had hosted spots for members on teams who play League of Legends and Overwatch as well as $4,000 scholarships for those lucky team members. Fortnite is next on the list, and the first of its kind for the school — and the rest across the country.

It’s no surprise, however, considering how much of a massive success Fortnite has become. It’s at the height of its popularity, with celebrities like Drake singing its praises, its mobile app making a million dollars daily, and a fast track to becoming a household name. Of course a scholarship would potentially be available to those who play well enough to make it a living.

While competitive Fortnite hasn’t yet found the same footing as games like League of Legends or Overwatch, it seems to be hurtling toward that conclusion like a bat out of Hades, and by this time next year we may very well see it flourishing even further. Of course, that means prospective student athletes may no longer be hitting the books and getting into more trouble practicing their Fortnite games between classes.

If you’re planning on making a living out of playing Fortnite, make sure you don’t abandon your studies! You never know when they’ll come in handy.
