PlayStation 2 Games Can Now be Downloaded to PlayStation 4 Consoles

Historically speaking, Sony hasn’t had the best track record for opening their console ecosystems to outside influence; whether that be through cross-play with other systems, or even backwards compatibility. The PlayStation Now service went some way to addressing that. However, thanks to a new upgrade, gamers can now download PlayStation 2 games to their PlayStation 4s via PlayStation Now.

You Can Now Download PlayStation 2 Games to Your PlayStation 4

Until now, the PlayStation Now service has only allowed gamers to play older PlayStation 2 titles via streaming. This means that users with less-than-stellar internet connections have struggled to actually use the service. Plus, intermittent connections, frame-rate drops, and other problems have hounded the streaming system. Sony has now announced, however, that the PlayStation Now service has received a major upgrade. This upgrade will let gamers download and save PlayStation 2 games onto their PlayStation 4 consoles.

PlayStation 2 Games Can Now be Downloaded to a PlayStation 4

“Almost all PS4 games in the service,” says Sony’s statement on the PlayStation Blog“including Bloodborne, God of War 3 Remastered, NBA 2K16, and Until Dawn, will be available for download, in addition to the PS Now lineup of classic PS2 games remastered for PS4. This feature will be gradually rolled out to PS Now subscribers over the next couple of days, so if you don’t see the feature on your PS Now today, make sure to check back again soon.”

Unfortunately, PlayStation Now is not yet exactly a perfect system. Because the service’s PS3 games have not been optimized for the PlayStation 4, users will still be unable to download and save them. In addition, the PS Now update only seems to apply to the US for the time being. Presumably, it will soon be rolled out globally. Nevertheless, PlayStation owners outside of the US may have to wait a while longer. Gamers should remember that PlayStation Now is a separate subscription service to PlayStation Plus. As such, although gamers must subscribe to the service, they need not have a PlayStation Plus subscription.
