PlayStation Chief Reveals God of War has Passed Five Million Units Sold

When God of War first released back on the 20th of April, it shot to the top of the bestselling lists. Santa Monica Studio’s first God of War game for five years broke record after record; the game was incredibly well received by both fans and critics alike. Now, PlayStation chief John Kodera has revealed that the game has surpassed five million units sold.

Last month, it was revealed that God of War sold over 3.1 million units in just its first three days. That success continued, keeping the game at the top of most bestselling lists for weeks after the launch. Now, the reason for that is clear; within its first month, God of War sold over five million copies. It was already known that God of War’s launch month had been the most successful of any PlayStation exclusive ever, since the release of the original PlayStation back in the late ’90s. However, this new information puts a clear figure to that accolade.

Putting the Figures into Perspective

To put the amount of units sold into perspective, God of War III sold around 5.2 million units across its entire lifetime. That figure was also the highest of any God of War title at that point in 2012; the first God of War had sold around 4.6 in lifetime sales, while Chains of Olympus had 3.26 million, Ghost of Sparta had 1.2 million, and Origins had just 700,000. Looking at more recent PlayStation exclusives, it took Horizon: Zero Dawn an entire year to reach 7.6 million total sales.

With success of this magnitude, the future of the God of War series seems almost assured. The game’s director, Cory Barlog, has expressed no desire to make DLC for the game. However, he has similarly made comments about having plans for a further five God of War games. It seems highly likely that he will get the chance to pursue that goal.
