Rumor: PS5 Backwards Compatibility Could Go Beyond PS4

Ever since Sony revealed the official holiday 2020 release window for the PS5, we’ve had a lot of news pour in, and plenty of fresh rumors as well. Among them is one which should excite anyone who was disappointed to hear that the PlayStation 5 supposedly will not include backwards compatibility beyond PlayStation 4. Maybe there is still hope that PS5 backwards compatibility could include earlier games after all.

PS5 Backwards Compatibility Could Include More Than Just PS4

The rumor about PS5 backwards compatibility comes from a PlayStation insider called @PSErebus on Twitter.

The text simply reads, “Do not dispose of, trade or sell your PlayStation®, PlayStation®2, PlayStation®3 or PlayStation®4 games.”

That is a pretty vague recommendation, and in no way definitively states that the PS5 is expected to have extended backwards compatibility. But how else are we to interpret this? The only people who have any motivation to unload all of their old PlayStation games on various systems are those who might be disposing of their old consoles to make room for the PS5. So the tweet seems to be suggesting that they might be able to run those games on the PS5.

How reliable is this insider? @PSErebus has a good track record. He even correctly predicted the release date for The Last of Us Part 2. Given that, there is reason to be optimistic about his tweet and what it seems to indicate. Just don’t get your hopes up too high yet, since this is nowhere near the territory of certainty. If there is going to be extended backwards compatibility, we also do not know yet how broad it will be. Will it encompass all games, or just select titles?
