Red Dead Redemption 2: How Do I Grow Arthur’s Hair and Beard All the Way Out?

In Red Dead Redemption 2, things can get hairy quick.Bump into a civilian on the crowded streets of Saint Denis and suddenly the cops are after you. Mosey on up to the wrong campfire and the O’Driscoll boys start shooting. Stick up a bank and make out with thousands of dollars and, shucks, just like that you’re a wanted man.

While Rockstar’s open world game excels at speedy escalations, Arthur himself takes a little bit longer to get hairy. But, with a little patience and a few bottles of Hair Tonic, our gruff but lovable cowboy is more than capable of going full yeti.

Here’s a quick guide to helping Arthur Morgan become his best, most wizardly self.

How to Grow Your Hair and Beard in RDR2

In Red Dead Redemption 2, Arthur’s hair and beard grow naturally over time. Using the mirror in his tent, you can shave his facial hair in a variety of different ways. You can trim Arthur’s chops, chin and mustache to different lengths, if it suits your fancy. For a hair cut, however, you’ll need to pay a barber in one of the game’s bustling towns.

But, there’s no comparable quick fix for growing Arthur’s hair out. If you want a bushy beard and long greasy hair, patience is your only option. And, once Arthur’s hair reaches a certain length—the game notifies you when this happens— it will stop growing passively. To get to Arthur’s final bushy form, you’ll need Hair Tonic.

Buying and Using Hair Tonic

You can purchase Hair Tonic in any General Store in the game. Approach the counter and select the catalog. When Arthur opens the book and pages to the Table of Contents, select Tonics. Arthur will then flip to the Tonics section, where a Hair Tonic ad dominates the opening page.

With the default amount of satchel space, Arthur can carry three bottles of the stuff (which may or may not be snake oil; not to be confused with Snake Oil) at a time. Confusingly, after purchase, Hair Tonic is not classified as a tonic in your satchel. Instead, you’ll find your supply in the Kit section.

Swig it down, and watch hair sprout from Arthur’s crown. Well, actually, the growth isn’t noticeable. But, this is a necessary step if you want Arthur to go full Hagrid.
