Red Dead Redemption 2: Improving Stats and Maintaining Cores

Red Dead Redemption 2 is just the sort of game that will appeal to action/adventure fans. However, it sounds like RPG fans will have reason the check the game out as well. According to Rockstar, improving protagonist Arthur Morgan’s stats will require players to engage with a real-time tracking system called cores.

In Red Dead Redemption 2, real-time actions will slowly improve Arthur's stats.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Stats and Cores

As GameSpot mentioned in this recent hands-on preview, the concept of cores takes some getting used to. The system operates in a similar manner as GTA: San Andreas where real-time actions could directly affect your stats. In Red Dead Redemption 2, stats like health regeneration, stamina, and even the Deadeye meter are tied to cores. If you consistently perform certain actions, you’ll level up an associated core and improve that core’s assigned stats.

For example, sprinting will slowly improve your stamina core, allowing you to sprint longer distances without needing to rest. If you manually heal yourself after taking damage, your health core will improve, upping your health regeneration rate. Cores also tie into more generalist stats like strength, grit, and instinct. Leveling those stats up will in turn make it easier to improve their associated cores. This combined with Red Dead Redemption 2’s dialogue system will allow players to shape Arthur Morgan into their ideal outlaw.

Rockstar hasn’t yet revealed how many different cores Red Dead Redemption 2 will have. However, it’s safe to assume that players will have to balance and maintain various attributes to stay at peak performance. Arthur Morgan will always be a competent criminal, but players who enjoy micromanaging their stats will find their efforts rewarded.

Of course, stats and Cores are just one of the many ways in which players can influence the game. Mundane activities such as taking care of your horse or even getting a bath can ultimately prove beneficial. We’ll find out just how much players can influence Red Dead Redemption 2 when the game launches on October 26.
