Top 5 Scariest Horror Video Games

When it comes to Horror video games, the scarier they are, the better. Here are the best horror video games rated by the level of their scary factor.

5) Boogeyman 2

Boogeyman 2 is the 2017 indie horror game developed by Barry McCabe. While you might think that a game is scary only if it is based on an abandoned house filled with ghosts, think again. The claustrophobic element of Boogeyman 2 is the main reason why you get nightmares after playing it. Additionally, it is not because you are in a room that makes it claustrophobic. It is because you are in a dark child’s room on a bed surrounded by creepy toys and the only moves you can do are limited to four, based on where the sound of Boogeyman’s entry comes from. By the way, you are the child.

4) Emily Wants To Play

I never got to finish this one because after a while you cannot deal with all the dolls at once unless you keep your cool and manage not to be scared of them – which is more difficult than you might think. Emily Wants To Play is another indie horror game created by Shawn Hitchcock and released in 2016. You are a pizza delivery guy who is so unlucky as to be chosen to deliver pizzas to that creepy house filled with dolls that are moving, along with Emily in the basement. The goal is to survive certain hours during which each doll appears. There are three dolls with different abilities each and in order to defeat them, you must use different tactics.

3) Home Sweet Home

Home Sweet Home is the 2017 survival/horror video game developed by Yggdrazil Group. Another claustrophobic and scary game based on a weird building, this one is haunted by a woman. You wake up and try to find your way back home, which is harder than you might have thought since you have to hide yourself from a ghost that appears out of nowhere. This game is much funnier if you play it at a horror game night with some friends. Are you able to find the way home?

2) Layers of Fear

Developed by Bloober Team, Layers of Fear was released in 2016 and has its own claustrophobic element. You are trapped in a house and have to find the all the pieces of a portrait in order for the whole story to unfold. Each piece you find causes the rooms of the house to change, leading you step by step towards the truth. However, it has different possible endings, which is what makes it really interesting. Each ending depends on the steps you are taking and how you are moving through the house. What makes it scarier than the two previous ones I mentioned are the hallucinations and the creepy apparitions that haunt your main protagonist.

1) Monstrum

This game is my personal favorite, maybe because it has smart ways to escape and win the game. Although the other ones are very claustrophobic, this one is not centered in a house but on a boat, which makes it even worse when it comes to the whole claustrophobia element. Monstrum is a survival/horror video game created by Team Junkfish, in which you are the unlucky guy who is trapped on a boat and has to find a way to escape before one of the three different types of monsters that chase you catches you. There are various different ways to hide from the monsters while you are searching for various pieces to build your escape transport. If you fail, sorry buddy, but you are dead.
