Sony Clarifies Party Chat Recording Messages

Have you been seeing messages on PS4 about your party voice chats possibly being recorded? If so, you are not the only one—these party chat recording messages have a lot of PS4 users worried. But thankfully, all is well. Sony explained what these messages are and what they mean in a recent blog post.

What Sony Said About the Party Chat Recording Messages

In its post, Sony wrote, “Following this update, users are seeing a notification about Party Safety and that voice chats in parties may be recorded. Voice chat recording for moderation is a feature that will be available on PS5 when it launches, and will enable users to record their voice chats on PS5 and submit them for moderation review. The pop up you’re seeing on PS4 right now is to let you know that when you participate in a chat with a PS5 user (post-launch), they may submit those recordings from their PS5 console to SIE.”

So, there you go. The notification does not mean that Sony is recording your voice chats. In the future, it will just let PS5 users know that if they are in a voice chat, another user may be recording them.

This actually seems like a pretty good way to protect users. Being able to submit voice chats for review might help protect users against harassment. At the same time, the notification ensures that everyone knows where they stand with respect to privacy. Indeed, that may be enough to prevent some incidents from even happening.

The post also details a lot of other information about PS4 system software update 8.00. So, check it out if you haven’t yet. In other news, don’t miss out on the Games of a Generation sale over at the PlayStation Store. Follow our PlayStation news for more.
