Sony Ducks Questions Regarding Possible PS5 Voice Assistant

You might be aware that recently, patents cropped up for a “PlayStation Assist” feature which could potentially show up in the PlayStation 5. The ability to control the PS5 through voice would be excellent for convenience and accessibility. But will it happen? When the topic of a voice assistant came up during a recent interview, Sony was unwilling to make any official remarks.

What Sony Said (or Didn’t) Regarding a Voice Assistant for PS5

The question of a voice assistant was one of numerous topics raised during the recent Wired interview with SIE CEO Jim Ryan and system architect Mark Cerny. Here is what Peter Rubin, the author of the article at Wired, stated regarding the matter:

“A recently published patent points to Sony developing a voice-driven AI assistant for the PlayStation. But all I get from Cerny is, “We’ll talk more about it another time.” (“We file patents on a regular basis,” a spokesperson tells me later, “and like many companies, some of those patents end up in our products, and some don’t.”)”

Rubin had noticed the existence of a little hole on the prototype controller that he was allowed to examine. He thought it might have been for a mic, which was what caused him to ask about the voice assistant. Could he be right about the hole? Maybe, maybe not. A mic does seem a likely possibility, but not the only one. We’ll just have to wait to find out.
