What will the future of gaming be like? Sony recently put out a new PS5 ad, “The Edge – Play Has No Limits.” It doesn’t give us a literal glimpse of the future, but it does offer a metaphorical view of what it may feel like to enter a new era of gaming. Let’s check it out.

A summary of the ad is that a dude on a boat is by himself, looking a bit lost, and then a ton of other vessels of all kinds show up around him (mostly boats, but also airplanes and others). They are all moving toward a glowing barrier, and then all decide to go ahead and cross through it. They are then in space, flying.
Eric Lempel, PlayStation’s global head of marketing, said to Variety, “It’s really just talking about who we are as a brand and exciting and thrilling our fans. We want to excite and thrill you. We want to show them a path to the mysterious unknown… what you’re seeing is them coming to the edge and then going beyond. And really, that’s what we’re trying to signal here. It’s not about the features. It’s a brand spot.”
The ad is cool in a symbolic way, and does showcase diversity, so those are plusses. On the downside, there is still no information about price or a release date, prompting a fair bit of snark in the comments. Many of those comments are variations on “Price has no limits,” or, “Play has no limits – but my wallet does.”
It’s pretty crazy we’re now halfway through September and still don’t have any release or pricing info. Microsoft is way ahead of the game with respect to keeping customers informed with both. Whenever Sony does reveal this information, we’ll let you know in our PlayStation news.
