Soulcalibur VI’s Newest Character Trailer Introduces the Villainous Azwel

Bandai Namco has released a new character-specific trailer for Soulcalibur VI, this time putting the spotlight on the game’s new villain: Azwel.

Azwel will fight with his Palindrome weapon.

As can be seen in the below trailer, Azwel is the self-styled ‘Leader of Humanity,’ and yet it’s quite clear from his appearance and dialogue that he’s not the benevolent sort of leader. Azwel’s weapon of choice is called the Palindrome, though calling it a “weapon” is a bit misleading since it can be more accurately described as an energy source which can transform into a number of different weapons on the fly. Given how Azwel’s Palindrome weapon functions, it’s also probably not surprising to learn that his fighting style is listed as “Practical Application of Martial Philosophy and Theory.” I’m willing to bet this is the first time that concepts like philosophy and theory packed such a strong punch.

Eagle-eyed Soulcalibur fans actually got their first glimpse of Azwel in a previous trailer that focused on Soulcalibur VI’s story-driven Libra of Soul mode. In Libra of Soul, players will get to create their own customized fighters and venture around the world, meeting other Soulcalibur fighters as they do. If the footage shown in the trailer is anything to go by, Libra of Soul players will ultimately cross blades with Azwel, though whether he’s the final villain they face remains to be seen.

Soulcalibur VI will launch on October 19 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC (denoting it as the very first Soulcalibur game to get a PC release), and along with entirely original characters like Azwel it will also feature The Witcher’s Geralt of Rivia as a guest fighter. Unfortunately, a bit of a dark cloud also hangs over the game as series producer Motohiro Okubo recently confirmed that if Soulcalibur VI doesn’t perform well commercially, it might very well be the last Soulcalibur game that’s ever released.
