The Division 2: Ubisoft Unveils New Gunner Specialization

Ubisoft’s The Division 2 currently has three different endgame specializations for players to utilize once they reach the level cap. However, the game’s post-launch content roadmap also includes three additional specializations, the first of which Ubisoft has now revealed. Starting later this month, The Division 2 players can unlock the tanky minigun-wielding Gunner specialization.

The Division 2 Gunner specialization

Ubisoft unveiled the Gunner specialization via this new post on The Division 2’s website. The Gunner was clearly designed for players who prefer being frontline tanks soaking up (and dishing out) damage. Like other specializations, the Gunner comes equipped with a unique skill tree, signature weapon, skill, and grenade type.

Merely having the Gunner specialization equipped can significantly increase a player’s survivability. This is because the player receives a bonus to armor which correlates to the amount of specialization ammo they’re carrying. The Gunner can also naturally use their unique minigun weapon to heavily damage and suppress enemies. However, the tradeoff is that the player can’t vault, roll, or take cover while their minigun is equipped.

To ensure enemies can’t hide from their minigun barrage, Gunner players can use the specialization’s unique skill and grenade type. The Banshee skill is a ranged directional attack which can hit enemies even when they’re in cover. Affected enemies become disoriented and confused, exiting cover in the process. This in turn leaves them exposed to the Gunner’s Riot Foam grenades which lock affected enemies in place.

Unlocking The Gunner

When The Division 2’s Gunner specialization arrives later this month, players will unlock it via a specific process. They’ll have to complete five stages of ‘Special Field Research’ challenges, each with their own objectives and rewards. Those who own The Division 2’s Year 1 Pass, however, will have the Gunner specialization immediately unlocked. However, even Year 1 Pass owners will want to work through the Special Field Research challenges. Each stage a Year 1 Pass owner completes will award a unique cosmetic reward going by the following list:

  • First Stage: ‘Fisticuffs’ and ‘Front Flex’ emotes
  • Second Stage: ‘Charcoal’ and ‘Detritus’ gear dyes
  • Third Stage: ‘Rosethorn’ and ‘Pineapple’ weapon skins
  • Fourth Stage: Gunner mask
  • Fifth Stage: Gunner uniform

Non-Year 1 Pass owners who still want the unique cosmetic items can purchase a ‘Gunner Specialization Pack’ for premium credits. The Gunner is available for testing via The Division 2’s public test server as of this writing. If all goes well the new specialization will be pushed to live servers later this month.
