The Outer Worlds’ Directors Aren’t Trying to Criticise Fallout 76

When The Outer Worlds was announced at the end of last year, the announcement prompted a large number of gamers to compare the game to Fallout 76. Comparisons between games are fine, of course. However, some seemed to think that Obsidian was actively trying to attack or criticise Bethesda with their announcement. Moreover, many gamers started using The Outer Worlds as ammunition for launching derisive attacks at Bethesda and Fallout 76. In a recent interview with Game Informer, the co-directors of the game spoke out against such behaviour.

The Outer Worlds’ Directors Aren’t Happy With People Using Their Game to Attack Fallout 76

Tim Cain and Leon Boyarsky, the co-directors of The Outer Worlds at Obsidian; recently spoke with Game Informer about their upcoming project. Asked about their reaction to gamers using the hype surrounding the game to attack Bethesda, and thinking that Obsidian was in agreement with those attacks, the directors were clear; “I remember telling a friend of mine,” says Tim Cain; “it’s disheartening when your game is used to tear down another game, when people aren’t excited because your game is going to exist, they’re excited because your game is going to show up another game. It’s like, that’s not what we’re making this for. We’re not making this to make anybody not want to play something else.”

The Outer Worlds Isn't a Criticism of Fallout 76

Boyarsky goes on to point out that The Outer Worlds has been in development for a long time. As such, the developers didn’t have any ‘strategy’ whatsoever concerning Bethesda’s most recent release. He also expresses solidarity with developers who work hard to make games under difficult circumstances only to see the game release to a negative reception; “it is a crushing experience,” he says; “you know, we had our own company went out of business.” The fact that, you know, people think we’re trying to say something about another company or another company’s games that people have put their heart and soul into is not something that we’re really, you know, happy about. We don’t really want to foster that kind of thing.”

“The world’s big enough for a bunch of different kind of games,” ends Cain, as the two hope that fans will get excited about and enjoy The Outer Worlds without using it to attack other developers and their games.
