The Witcher Season 2 Filming Will Restart This August

The official Twitter account for The Witcher Netflix series today revealed that production for the The Witcher Season 2, which has been on hold due to COVID-19, will officially restart on the 17th of August. The announcement was shared in poem form, in keeping with the character of Jaskier:

The Witcher Season 2 Production Restarting in August

Production on The Witcher Season 2 reportedly began shortly after the release of the first season. Given the enormous success of that first season, which was for some time the most-watched show in the world, proving even more popular than Disney’s The Mandalorian, there has been huge anticipation for the second season. However, early production was brought to a halt by the spread of COVID-19. As such, for the last few months, production on the second season has been on hold.

Now we know that Netflix will be restarting production on The Witcher Season 2 on the 17th of August. While it’s not impossible, this does mean that a 2020 release date for the second season is somewhat unlikely. The first season was released at the end of 2019. However, the coronavirus delay means that the second season is likely to release in early-to-mid 2021, rather than the same time this year. Of course, Netflix has not yet announced a release date. (Indeed, with things as they are, they are unlikely to do so anytime soon.)

The Witcher Season 2 Production Restarts in August 2

Netflix has already announced several casting decisions for new characters coming in the second season of The Witcher. The biggest of these was that of Danish actor Kim Bodnia as Geralt’s mentor Vesemir; a character who could well prove to be a major new addition to the cast. Geralt’s fellow Witchers Eskel and Lambert will also be appearing, with actors Paul Bullion and Thue Ersted Rasmussen taking on the roles. Meanwhile, Kristofer Hivju will be playing Nivellen; a character based on the beast from Beauty and the Beast. Lydia van Bredevoort and Francesca Findabair will also be joining the story, with Aisha Fabienne and Mecia Simson starring as the pair.
