This Year’s Call of Duty is Rumoured to be a Modern Warfare Reboot

While recent news has touched on the seemingly troubled development of Call of Duty’s 2020 title, there is now news about the series’ 2019 title. According to new reports, the 2019 Call of Duty will be entitled; “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare”. The reason for this choice of name is reportedly because the game will be a “soft reboot” of the Modern Warfare series.

The 2019 Game Will Apparently be “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare”

The news first emerged from Twitter user LongSensation, who revealed the upcoming title. The apparent leak has since been confirmed by Jason Schreier; “I can confirm this is true,” he said on Twitter; “and that it’s hilarious. The first one was ‘Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare,’ so obviously the fourth one is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.’ Video games are absurd”. Eurogamer have also said that the title is accurate.

Although the titles are subtly different between the 2007 game and the upcoming game, it is apparently some sort of franchise reboot. Schreier said in a follow-up Tweet that it was to be a “soft reboot”. It’s currently unknown exactly what this means. Fans are quite likely to see the new Call of Duty at E3, next month. After all, the game will release at some point later this year. However, it’s possible that Activision may release some official confirmation now that the title is seemingly public.

The last title in the sub-series was 2011’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Since then, the series has generally moved into more futuristic settings, with games like Advanced Warfare, Infinite Warfare, and Black Ops 4. However, this hasn’t always proven popular with fans. As such, the companies behind the franchise may be looking to return to its roots to some degree. Rebooting the popular Modern Warfare series could prove to be a good move to win over fans; certainly, with the commercial success of Call of Duty: WWII in 2017, there’s a clear precedent that getting back to the series’ roots could prove to be an excellent idea.
