Toronto’s Overwatch League Team To Host Unveiling Party This Month

The Overwatch League added eight new teams to its ranks heading into season two, one of which is based in Toronto.

This Toronto-based expansion team announced last week that it will be holding a live event at Toronto’s Berkeley Church to unveil the details of their brand. The team broke the news via Twitter, saying their “introduction to the world” will take place on Oct. 24 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. CT.

However, the tweet doesn’t really give any more details than that. We aren’t sure how complete the introduction will be, but fans should expect to see the team’s name, logo, and branding revealed at the event.

It is also likely that the team will take this opportunity to reveal part of its roster, but maybe not the whole thing since the Overwatch League signing window is still open for all teams in the league. Toronto and all the other OWL teams now have until Dec. 1 to sign at least eight players.

If Toronto’s introduction event on Oct. 24 is complete, the reveal should include the core roster of six players. The transfer window wills till be open for over a month after that, though, so there’s a chance we could see a Contenders player get a spot on the team as a substitute. Toronto will only be able to sign other players if they haven’t reached their roster cap of 12 players.

The team did hint at a way for non-Toronto-based fans to watch the event – probably a livestream on Twitch or another streaming service – but no further information was provided.

Toronto isn’t the only expansion team that’s starting to get the ball rolling on branding reveals. The Guangzhou, China team, which is owned by the Nenking Group, released a teaser video via YouTube on Friday.

The video doesn’t really reveal much at all, but definitely makes it seem like the organization is getting ready to make some moves.

Overwatch League

Last week, Blizzard finally revealed the start date for the Overwatch League’s second season: Feb. 14, 2019.

With the addition of the eight new expansion teams – Atlanta, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Paris, Toronto, Vancouver and Washington, D.C. – the league was able to decrease the total number of matches for each team, but increase the number of matches overall. In the second season, each team will play 28 regular season matches, down from last year’s 40.

There will also be longer breaks between each of the five stages, which should help players find some more balance between their schedule and their health. The new format should also make for some higher-level Overwatch matches since teams will have more time to prepare for each opponent.
