Treyarch Reveals First Look at Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies

Just one day after the launch of Season 6 in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone, Treyarch has released the first official trailer for Dark Aether; the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies mode. The trailer offers players a first look at what to expect from the mode, featuring weapons, mechanics, enemies, and more.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War – Zombies

In the words of Treyarch themselves “It wouldn’t be a Black Ops game without Zombies,” and players got to see what’s coming on that front today for the first time. Treyarch has been subtly dropping hints leading to today’s reveal for quite some time, and now, the studio has released concrete information about the mode and its storyline. The Black Ops Cold War Zombies mode is officially entitled ‘Dark Aether’. Its first episode – Die Maschine – will be available to play at launch.

“Taking place in the 1980s, Black Ops Cold War paves the way for a completely new Zombies experience that celebrates the heritage built since World at War,” writes Treyarch; “This is something fresh, with touches of the familiar… if you know where to look. It’s a new beginning, laced in legacy.”

According to Treyarch, the Dark Aether story will begin with the discovery of a Nazi experiment from World War II; Projekt Endstation. Unusually for a Zombies game, the mode won’t feature its own cast of characters. Instead, players will be able to play as the same Operators available in multiplayer, as well as campaign characters like Sergeant Frank Woods. In the story of Dark Aether, these Operators are members of Requiem, an international response team backed by the CIA. In addition to facing Zombies, Requiem will also oppose a faction known as Omega Group; a Soviet-backed organisation with goals of harnessing the undead phenomena.

The Black Ops Cold War Zombies mode will feature familiar mechanics like the Perk machines, Pack-a-Punch, and Mystery Boxes. However, there are also new mechanics on the way. These will include things like Field Upgrades and support weapons, as well as the option to exfiltrate from the map. Players will even be able to bring their own weapons into the game, if they so choose.
